A genetically modified organism, or GMO, is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. The process of genetically modifying an organism is done by taking a gene from something else and putting it in the plant you want to get the genes you choose. One major plant that is grown in the United States that is often genetically modified is corn. Almost all farms now grow GMO corn. If the corn was not genetically modified, it would take longer to grow and be much smaller. Another plant that is genetically modified is soybeans. By doing so, they are more resistant to weeds. While some people believe GMO plants are dangerous, there are positives to them. They are better for the environment, better for the economy, do not harm the soil, and sometimes can be made with genes to protect from some diseases. Although it seems like there is nothing bad about GMO products, there are still some concerns from many people.
