It is not easy being Dewey Dell. William Faulkner uses characterization in As I Lay Dying in order to present Dewey Dell’s complex character. She is the daughter of Addie bundren and all of her siblings are boys. Furthermore, she is pregnant with a baby she does not want and will not talk about it to anyone, which only makes her life harder. To deal with her tough life, Dewey Dell uses her personality. Therefore, throughout the novel, Dewey Dell’s hopeful, lonely, and responsible personality compels her to forcefully move on with life despite the negative events happening around her.
Throughout the novel, Faulkner uses foreshadowing in order to establish Dewey Dell's hopeful personality which slowly helps her move on with the journey of getting to Jefferson. While the family is on the journey, Dewey Dell states, "New Hope 3 mi. New Hope. 3 mi…I believe in God, God. God, I believe in God" (Faulkner 121-122). In this passage, Dewey dell emphasizes "New Hope" by repeating it many times, as a way of symbolizing a new hope that she or the family may have. They may not have had it before...
