JG Ballard’s High-Rise is an excellent depiction of the outcome of destruction of civilization. The novel starts with, “Later, as he sat on his balcony eating the dog, Dr Robert Laing reflected on the unusual events that had taken place within this huge apartment building during the previous three months”(Ballard, p.13). There is tension and all aspect of civilization begins to deteriorate. High-rise is typically either higher income (condos, lofts) or lower income (public housing). The residents of JG Ballard’s novel live in the former. The building is divided into three sections. JG Ballard used Wilder to suggest that humans strive to seek pleasure and avoid pain. We see characters in high-rise using their primitive instincts to live meaningful life.
At the end of the novel, majority of the people who survive are the women’s group. This defeats our society’s idea of gender roles. Societies often assume women are weak and. In high-rise, that premise is proven wrong. Women are strong in their own ways. Women’s emotional strengths help them survive. The survival of the women’s group says that gender roles do not hold true. Although society likes to create gender roles, we should affirm that each individual in the society is unique, so no one should be trapped in a cage due to their gender.
