Director Paul Feig that is well known for his works in Freaks and Geeks, The Heat, and I am David worked on the movie Bridesmaids. Bridesmaids is one of the examples of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, where the hero face through certain challenges in life. Annie Walker will be the main character of this movie that portrays the hero’s journey. She who has been having problems throughout her life, goes through hardships in order to fulfill her friend’s happiness. Her mother always tells her that “Hitting bottom is a good thing. Because there’s nowhere to go but up” (Bridesmaid). Without thinking twice Annie tries her fullest to impress her best friend to become the maid of honor. Even though another woman is trying to take her place, still, she heads forward to where it would be the hero’s treasure. In this case, Annie’s treasure would be her friendship. The goal of the hero’s journey would be getting what the hero aims for. This movie clearly illustrates some of the steps in the hero’s journey; Annie’s treasure, her hard life and her rivalry.
The call of adventure is the first step of the hero’s journey. Annie is offered to be her best friend’s maid of honor. Lillian tells Annie that she is now engaged and regardless of Annie’s relationship status, she accepts the offer. This is an example of the call of adventure; where the hero is presented with a voyage. Annie is introduced to some of Lillian’s acquaintances and she realizes that they have a different life than hers. All of them can afford what she can’t. This is where the hero starting to show limits and has to overcome to truly begin the journey. This will be the threshold of the hero’s journey. Annie meets Helen who is much more beautiful, skillful and wealthier than her. ...

... and earns the treasure. In this occasion, Annie does not have any reward for getting the treasure. Her fight is actually against herself. She has to overcome on how she thinks about life. She has to change the way she treats others and herself; not based on her miserable life.
Bridesmaids displays a journey of a girl who encounters trials to gain her treasure. The movie shows good examples of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey. The hard life that Annie has and the problems she has to go through herself, clearly indicates a hero’s challenges. Nonetheless, Annie still gives her greatest shot to make sure her best friend’s wedding is going well. Even though Lillian once kicks her out of the wedding, Annie does not think of getting a revenge. In the future, movies will continue to use the Hero’s Journey where a hero will always sticks to the goals they are shooting for.
