Distance education is an integral part of modern day higher education in Australia. Every brick and mortar university offers almost every course available to on-campus students as a distance education option. There are several reasons for universities to offer distance education, such as cost, want and desire of potential students who cannot attend a traditional campus for various reasons and also political interest. We will look at the question if distance education and on-campus students have the same opportunities to gain an equivalent education and if it is unfair to treat these two distinct groups unequally to achieve an equal outcome.
In our modern society, we pride ourselves on the fact that opportunity is open to all, that everyone has a “fair go.” Some countries have built their national pride and anthem on the notion of liberty, equality, and fraternity. Therefore, it could be assumed that in almost all areas of endeavour all participants are given an equal opportunity to succeed. However, does this mean that all participants are also given equity or fairness as they strive to meet their goals? Lets us examine the terms equality and equity and if they relate to fairness for a distance education student versus an on-campus student.
First, there must be a definition of both distance education (hereafter known as DE) and on-campus (hereafter known as OC) and what the students studying under these regimes will expect in the way of learning aids. A DE student typically does not have any physical contact with the university and are undertaking their studies some distance from the campus, usually at either their home or place of employment. There are many reasons for choosing distance study, one could be that the student is in ...

...t quite often ethical principles are grounded in cultural and educational background. So is there a test that could be applied to measure the ethics of decisions? In E-commerce 2013: business. technology.society(Laudon & Traver, p. 534) it is recommended to apply “The New York Times Test”. “Assume that the results of your decision on a matter will be the subject of the lead article in the New York Times the next day. Will the reaction of the readers be positive or negative? Would your parents, friends and children be proud of your decision?” So could we apply this litmus paper to the question of resources to the DE students and OC students? Is it an ethical proposition to give all available resources to everyone as suggested by Kant, or is it within the bounds of ethical behaviour to only give what resources are needed by each group to achieve an expected outcome?

An industry that once promoted fairness and attainability was now itself becoming an obstacle to overcome. “American universities are in fact organized according to middle- and upper-class cultural norms or rules of the game and that these norms do indeed constitute an unseen academic disadvantage for first-generation college students transitioning to university settings” (Stephens et. al, 2012). This proposed characteristic serves as an almost uncontrollable and unchangeable disadvantage that students will likely fail to subdue. Institutions should serve as mediating platforms that allow students to start at impartial grounds, where their talents, abilities and connections are the only factors that can influence their
This critical review will look at the skill of administering antipsychotic depot intramuscular injections. This skill was practised while I was on my psychiatric placement in a community setting. The setting will not be named for confidentiality reasons as set out by An Bord Altranais. According to An Bord Altranais (2008), under no circumstances may a student nurse disclose a health care facility’s identity in an assignment. Clinics were run twice a week in this particular community setting for patients with mental health problems such as schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder to receive their depot intramuscular injections. This skill was chosen as the author was practising administering intramuscular injections almost on a daily basis but there is confusion around what is the best practice for administering depot intramuscular injections in the mental health setting.
Once a student reaches college, one might think that the playing field is more equal. What if all students who present to college have about the same knowledge base? One would expect two students, with equal knowledge base, but different social economic status, to do the same in their classes. However, this is not the case. In a recent New York Times article “Are College Lectures Unfair?”
In his article, “Can You Be Education from a Distance?”, James Barszcz effectively weighs the pros and cons of online education compared to the traditional method, while effectively supporting his position with factual information and statistics. While distance education proves to be convenient for students, Barszcz asserts that it eliminates valuable experiences necessary in order to get the most out of the material being learned.
343) states that there is disagreement and confusion about what the concepts of equity and equality really mean and what they involve. Equity recognises that there are some who are ‘worse off’ then others, which limits their access to engaging in public discourse such as education, therefore steps are required to be taken to provide these people with equitable access to education (Schement, 2001). In this context Ramsden (1999) discusses how quantity of resource, acts as an equity mechanism, While students who study on campus are able to receive learning instruction in the form of tutorials and lectures, which are supplemented by the reading materials. Distance students have to rely on the interpretation of purely textual (written) information to study. Therefore the increase of ‘physical’ resources available to distance students weighs up as equal in comparison to the content available to on-campus students. Concurrent research pivoting off Ramsden’s (1991) work suggests quantity of resources as an equitable practice can be yielded as agents of change in educational outcomes (Lane & McAndrew, 2010), engagement in learning (Cramp, 2011; Dunne, Zandstra, Brown & Nurser, 2011 p. 113-124) and developing heightened productivity in learners (Taylor & Wilding, 2009). Therefore it is wholly an appropriate view that the provision of differing quantities of resources to students, dependent on their enrolled delivery mode aids to balance out inequality that is

Many educators and administrators are beginning to comprehend the impact of distance learning. In fact the American Council on Education predicts there will be more distance learning classes offered. John Noon writes in Syllabus, ‘Distance learning courses are offering students new flexibility in course and even campus selection, causing many institutions to begin redefining themselves’ (McHenry & Bozik 20). For example the University of Phoenix, a for-profit university, offers distance learning classes to 50,000 students spanning 12 states. Additionally Britain’s Open University will align itself with several universities in the United States and will start classes this year (Markel 208). Thus distance education is ‘currently the fastest growing form of domestic and international education’ (Boling & Robinson 169).

Some students within society need to have online learning to complete college degrees due to their lifestyles. While it is good to have online learning as an option if one chooses, it should not be the only option available to some students. Some may argue that online education is not creating discrimination within the educational environment. Furthermore, some may suggest that online learning is benefiting our students in society. There has been a breakthrough in time and geographical limitations of education via online courses (Ho, 2009).

In today’s society the major goal of education is “to increase economic growth and prepare students for jobs in the global economy” ( Spring, 2014, p. 10). However, the political goal is still educating future citizens and political leaders. Meanwhile, the social control and resolve social issues are still the social goals of the educational system. Nevertheless, one social issue has not been resolved “the equal opportunity.” This goal has become one of the subjects in disagreement and the path to reach that goal is not ready in place due of inconsistencies between the social, political and economic powers of the system. That is why the question still remains what formulas or standards do we need to reach to implement the goal of educational equality for all in the future?
