Throughout George Luca’s film THX-1138, similarities between the society in the movie and the society in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World can easily be seen. Both societies function under a ruling party that ensures full loyalty to the regime. Through the use of holograms showing naked women, or a brutal scene of a police officer beating a man, the governmental body is able to force feed the citizens. The citizens live in rooms that contain nothing but a medicine cabinet, and a hologram. For instance the main character THX-1138 elaborated, his roommate (LUN-3417) and himself share “nothing but space” (Lucas, THX-1138). By structuring the rooms this way, the citizens have no other options but to watch holograms and take the medications that are prescribed by the state. The prescribed medications are given in order to keep citizens from illness, as they work demanding jobs in hazardous environments. These medications also aid in suppressing emotions, mostly negative.
