Narcissistic Personality Disorder is identified by a long-lasting pattern of superiority and a consuming need for admiration, and usually a lack of empathy towards others. Narcissistic people usually believe they are centralized in other people's lives. This pattern of behavior is generally considered inappropriate for people today.
According to Psych Central, narcissistic people are often thought of as snobby, disdainful people with patronizing attitudes. A person with this disorder may complain about someone else's "rudeness" or "stupidity." They may conclude a medical evaluation as if they are a physician.
In laypeople terms, a person with this disorder is described as a "narcissist" or as a person with "narcissism." Both terms refer to someone with narcissistic personality disorder.
According to Psych Central, personality disorder is generally an enduring pattern of behavior that deviates from the norm of the individual's culture. The pattern is seen in at least two of the following areas: cognition, affect, interpersonal functioning, or impulse control. This pattern is inflexible and pervasive across a broad range of personal and social situations. Typically, it leads to a lot of distress or functional impairment. The pattern tends to be stable and long-lasting and the onset could be traced back to adolescence or early adulthood.
Diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder requires five or more of the symptoms that are to be named off. According to Psych Central, people with narcissism usually have a grandiose sense of self-importance. They may exaggerate talents or achievements, and expect to be recognized as superior for them. ...ders tend to not seek out treatment until the disorder begins to significantly impact another person's life. This often happens when a person's coping resources are stretched too thin to deal with stress.
Researchers today do not know what causes narcissistic personality disorder. Theories, however, link the causes to biological, social, and psychological factors. This suggests that no single factor is responsible, in actuality it is the complex mingling of all three factors.
Treatment of narcissistic personality disorder involves a long-term psychotherapy with an experienced therapist. Medications may also be prescribed to help with troubling symptoms.
