In the end of "Anthem", Prometheus comes to the realization that his society's teachings and ideas were not helpful in advancement to the society. Ideas like individuality, that the society tried to squash out of its people, is beneficial to the society as a whole because men are meant to think for themselves. In the book Prometheus made the light bulb back when he was in the society, but once he showed it to the World Council, they but him in jail. After this incidence he realized that no matter what brilliant things he invents, it will never be something that particular society can use. At first he is confused, but realizing that he was acting like an individual made him see that maybe society is the evil one and he is the good one. All of this made him realize that maybe he is not meant for this, and he is thrown out into the uncharted territory. He learns that men are meant to think for themselves, and that if they do society will become more advanced and they will be able to move forward instead of staying at the same spot forever. This is how he realizes his "sins" were actually good and that men are supposed to think for themselves.
In Prometheus's society, being an individual is considered a "sin", but as events occur Prometheus begins to comprehend that being an individual is the way men are supposed to think. In the beginning of the book, he has a name like everyone else, and like everyone else he is living in a world that thrives off fear. Everyone is afraid to think, act, or be different from the rest, because as society has taught them being different and an individual is a "sin". As he began to grow up, he noticed that he was somewhat different from the rest of the people. He disliked many things such as the way society made people mate because he thought this was despicable and grotesque. The more he began to grow up he was becoming more of an individual and this scared him, he even began to see himself as an evil person. When he started to play around with science and began inventing things like the light bulb, this scared him but then he reasoned that maybe even though he was acting as an individual the council would let it go because it was such a remarkable invention.
Within our society, there is a gleaming stigma against the drug addicted. We have been taught to believe that if someone uses drugs and commits a crime they should be locked away and shunned for their lifetime. Their past continues to haunt them, even if they have changed their old addictive ways. Everyone deserves a second chance at life, so why do we outcast someone who struggles with this horrible disease? Drug addiction and crime can destroy lives and rip apart families. Drug courts give individuals an opportunity to repair the wreckage of their past and mend what was once lost. Throughout this paper, I will demonstrate why drug courts are more beneficial to an addict than lengthy prison sentences.
When Prometheus asks Zeus to give the mortals fire, he states that it is best to “let [the humans] shiver with cold…..[and] to let them be poor and ignorant so that [the gods] may thrive and be happy.” (Baldwin et al. par.7). Zeus is extremely selfish and wants to keep the fire for himself, which makes him look like a villain to the humans. This shows how Prometheus does not appeal to the audience as a villainous deceiver of Zeus. Anyone who is extremely selfish can never be a hero as they only think about themselves. In this story, Prometheus is repeatedly depicted as a hero when he showed the mortals “ how to build houses out of wood and stone….tame sheep and cattle…….plow and sow and reap….protect themselves from storms of winter….[etc.]” (Baldwin et al. par. 13). Prometheus works extremely hard to teach the humans many techniques essential for survival and also risked his life when trying to steal fire. All of this is what makes him a hero to the humans. Anyone who goes out of their way to assist others in any form can be defined as a
The first question which must be addressed is, "Why have these men been made to suffer?" To simply say that Zeus or God is displeased is not enough, and to say that Prometheus and Job have sinned is confusing. Most Western readers approach these works with a pre-conceived notion of sin which has been born out of the Judeo-Christian theological tradition a tradition which dictates that there are specific moral rules which must be followed, and to transgress them is to sin. While this interpretation of sin may be functional for a reading of Job, it is useless for understanding Prometheus Bound.
Planned Parenthood is non-profit and has been around for over fifty years. Planned Parenthood offers many services to women, other than abortions. A few of the services offered to women are free health care, such as anemia testing, cholesterol screening, physical exams for employees and for sports, flu vaccinations, aid in quitting smoking, high blood pressure testing, tetanus vaccinations, and thyroid screening. The many other services they offer include free birth control, emergency contraception, testing for STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), breast cancer screenings, cervical cancer screenings, pelvic exams, free information to women, and a number of other things.(“General Health”) Under the Hyde amendment that passed in 1976, there has been a legislative provision prohibiting the use of certain federal funds to pay for abortion unless the pregnancy arises from incest, rape, or to save the life of the mother. During the fiscal year that ended in June 2014, Planned Parenthood affiliates around the country received $528.4 million in government funds. It has been estimated that 42 percent of their services went towards STD/STI testing and treatment, 34 percent went to contraceptive, 11 percent to women's health services, 9 percent to cancer screenings and prevention, 3 percent to abortion, and 1 percent to other services. It is undoubted that we are exposed to more open and activating political environment today than ever. We talk about 2016 presidency election, criticize those candidates’ political claims, argue about political issues and disdain those who belong to different “side” with us. And it is under this social context that Planned Parenthood, all of a sudden, is dragged into the political spotlight.
Noting that one thing is clear and that Planned Parenthood top priority is not the wellbeing of women. Behind this organization there are facts that they don’t want Americans to know which shows a whole different view of Planned Parenthood, like how there is a high abortion rate which the tax dollars generate and goes to the clinics revenue and also that this is a criminal organization. Conservatives argue that selling unborn baby parts for profit is a crime and can result is imprisonment. But the conservatives see that there should be a stop to funding Planned Parenthood, so now Congress has the chance to end government financing for Planned Parenthood. A voice of
One major controversy in America today deals with the corporate company of Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is an organization that provides health care, sex education, and information pertaining to anything in reproductive health care to men and women around the world. Over 1.5 million people get provided with sexual education every year through Planned Parenthood, and 2.7 million people in the U.S alone annually visit Planned Parenthood, and over 5 million men and women around the world. This company’s main goal is to prevent unintended pregnancies, and inform young and old on the measures to take if and when unwanted pregnancies happen. There are many different view points with this organization today, and currently it is a major controversy in the eyes of our government.
With the help of United States Government funding, Planned Parenthood and its affiliates have been men and women’s health care providers since 1933. Congressional bills have recently been written to defund this organization because of ethical issues that have risen about abortions carried out in these facilities. The defunding of Planned Parenthood would not only take away affordable family planning for those in need, but the ability to provide life saving cancer screenings and other health services as well.
In the case of Roe vs. Wade the outcome by the Supreme Court was that women had the right to choose an abortion, therefore making it legal. As provided earlier the current numbers from Planned Parenthood’s annual report show that abortion is the service they provide the most, in fact it only makes up 3% of the services they provide (Planned). Planned Parenthood receives no funding towards abortion, so there should be no discussion of even of thinking of cutting the services they provide because critics think that all they do are abortions. The purpose of Planned Parenthood is to help and educate, and they have done so much to prove that. Planned Parenthood provides there services are set at a certain price so that everyone has a chance to obtain those fundamental healthcare services and denying access to that would cause a lot of harm to the people. Defunding Planned Parenthood would do more harm then good, an example would be women who go to Planned Parenthood seek birth control at an affordable price, it they don’t have that access like have been that would probably lead to more unwanted pregnancies and even more abortions. The organization’s services actually reduce the number of abortions (Finn). As mentioned earlier Planned Parenthood prevented 584,000 unintended pregnancies in 2010, which proves that the organization main objective is not abortion as the critics of the organization say. Everyone is entitled to the services Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that receives federal as well as state government funding. As per Lori Robertson’s article on factcheck.org, she states that “Planned parenthood’s 2008-2009 annual report states that it received $363.2 million in” Government grants”(Lori Robertson) As per government representative Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah and a member of the Republican Party he believes that the grants that the federal government have been providing PPFA have been mainly used on abortion service and not on health services. While being “In a senate floor speech on Aug.3, Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, who cosponsored a failed bill to fund Planned Parenthood, also said that “abortion account for 94 percent of Planned parenthood’s pregnancy services”” (D’Angelo Gore). The organization also have antiabortion groups who also wants the funding to be cut. One of the allegation that Monica Miller a rally organizer made against PPFA is that “ The kind of sexual ethic that Planned Parenthood promotes is sex for recreation, sec for mere pleasure”(Monica Miller). Meanwhile, we also have the religious groups that beli...
repeal President Barack Obama’s “Affordable Care Act”. There was a rejection of two different amendments, they both would have reimposed Planned Parenthood’s funding but one included a new tax on millionaires. However, the bill will not become
The complex issues of dealing with offenders in the criminal justice system has been a point of ongoing controversy, particularly in the arena of sentencing. In one camp there are those who believe offenders should be punished to the full extent of the law, while others advocate a more rehabilitative approach. The balancing act of max punishment for crimes committed, and rehabilitating the offender for reintegration into society has produced varying philosophies. With the emanation of drug-induced crimes over the past few decades, the concept of drug treatment courts has emerged. The premise of these courts is to offer a “treatment based alternative to prison,” which consist of intensive treatment services, random drug testing, incentives
The first step in ending the issue of drug use and abuse in our country is to cure the drug users from their addiction in a safe, controlled manner. As confirmed in an article from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “Drug addiction is a chronic disease characterized by compulsive, or uncontrollable, drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences and changes in the brain, which can be long lasting.” (“Treatment Approaches for Drug Addiction”) The addiction of drugs is an actual disease, and cannot be brushed off as something that can be stopped at any point in time. Drug addiction is just as serious as any other diagnosed disease and must be cured accordingly. Prison will not benefit those addicted to drugs because it is a disease that must be treated, just as any other illness is. In an attempt to end an addiction without help in a safe environment, dangerous consequences could result.
There are individuals who oppose the use of drug courts. These people argue that by letting drug offenders avoid incarceration the justice system is doing nothing more than giving offenders an easier punishment for their crimes. Some people feel that over the long term treatment will cost more than sending the offender to prison to pay their debt to society. There are those that feel that treatment not wa...
The complicated nature surrounding Heathcliff’s motives again adds an additional degree of ambiguity to his character. This motivation is primarily driven by Catherine’s marriage to Edgar and past rejection of Heathcliff, since he was a servant whom Hindley disapproved of. Prior to storming out of Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff overhears Catherine say, “It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now…” (Brontë 87). The obstacles that ultimately prevent Heathcliff from marrying Catherine provide insight into Heathcliff’s desire to bring harm to Edgar and Hindley. The two men play prominent roles in the debacle, Edgar as the new husband and Hindley as the head figure who refused Heathcliff access to Catherine. Following this incident, Catherine says, “Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same…” (Brontë 87). Catherine’s sentiment indicates she truly would rather be with Heathcliff, but the actions of others have influenced her monumental decision to marry Edgar. Furthermore, Heathcliff is motivated to not only ruin Edgar’s livelihood, but also gain ownership of his estate, Thrushcross Grange. This becomes clear when Heathcliff attempts to use Isabella
