History, or at least the study thereof, as shown by class, is divided into three specific categories: remembered, recovered and invented--each having their own benefits and downfalls. The main purpose of studying history is to gather information about the past; to see the cause and effects of different situations; to see how this information can be applied to our lives, to understand why and how and others think in certain ways; and thus eventually lead to a better appreciation different peoples—one way or another. It is also inprotant to realize that history is not just about ‘what-really-happened-in-the-past’, but is a complex intersection of truth, bias and hopes.
Realizing that the major importance of history is rooted upon ideas or principles and not facts, dates or names, this course was designed not to address the material as the history of X region from X date to X date, but rather in an order and a manner that the student (in this case, me) could retain the most valuable ideas possible and learn them in a fashion most aptly suited to the students understanding of certain ideas and principles.
I also realize the importance of the ideas and processes of history over the actual facts, names or dates within our study. Thus, in composing this capstone, I will attempt to use specific examples of course-material to exemplify what I thought was the main theme (themes) of the class, rather than attempting to go section by section and enumerate the material within. After all, I already have print copies of all of the course notes; if I wanted to go back and look at the any of the material covered, I can use those (note to my long-off-as-of-yet-self); therefore, it would be pointless for me to attempt restate all that was learned in all of the courses sections. With that stated, let us first look at one of the first cases of history as a science to see an exaple of the first type of history, remembered.
Because he is one of the first men that we have found to attempt to record the past, we say that Herodotus is the “Father of History.” Herodotus’s works, “The Histories”, which are of form of both a remembered and invented are a record of primarily two things: the Persian Wars, and the Greeks’ double defeat of the mighty forces led against Greece by the Persian kings Darius and Xerxes. Just as any good entertaining story would, the histories are full of gos...

... Schliemann liars, because we do not trace our own personal values back to them—if they are found discreditable, that does not mean that anything that we believe in, or even ourselves, is threatened. However, put something that we cherish, for example the Christian Church, into the spotlight, and we quickly become very defensive and uncomfortable. Perhaps this says something about human nature, and more so, possibly says something about how our view of history could become perverted.
Thus we see that history is much more than the study of “Dead White European Males”; it involves men and women from many different cultures, of many different lifestyles, the study of other related subjects such as language, writing and religion, it even at times requires one to be an expert on ceramics (as is the case of Denise Schmandt-Besserat's theory on the origins of cuneiform). The course has also provided invaluable information that has revealed the common background shared by some of the most dramatically contrasting civilizations of today. It is now up to the individual to use what he or she has learned from this class to better current society, and as an aid to comprehending other matters.
Poetry is a part of literature that writers used to inform, educate, warn, or entertain the society. Although the field has developed over the years, the authenticity of poetry remains in its ability to produce a meaning using metaphors and allusions. In most cases, poems are a puzzle that the reader has to solve by applying rhetoric analysis to extract the meaning. Accordingly, poems are interesting pieces that activate the mind and explore the reader’s critical and analytical skills. In the poem “There are Delicacies,” Earle Birney utilizes a figurative language to express the theme and perfect the poem. Specifically, the poem addresses the frangibility of the human life by equating it to the flimsy of a watch. Precisely, the poet argues that a human life is short, and, therefore, everyone should complete his duties in perfection because once he or she dies, the chance is unavailable forever.
3D printing, the process of making 3-Dimensional solid objects from a digital model, is now a turning into a revolution. With the price, stretching from many thousands to the cheapest, at $350, this technology can be used in the simplest boutiques and labs to the largest of industries. Mainstream media is only now popularizing 3D printing, although it has been around for decades. Being able to print absolutely anything, with almost any industrial material, it has already set up many debates for a positive or negative future.

“It [history] is like a river. From any vantage point, a river looks much the same day after day. But actually it is constantly flowing and changing…one day, when the banks are thoroughly weakened and the rains long and heavy, the river floods and bursts its banks, and may take a new course.” (Kay 1948)
Although the woman of the Jewish cultural are the domineering ones in relation to sex, they still maintain prestige modesty. Tz 'ni 'ut is another term in reference to modesty in the Jewish culture. It means simple, plain, shy, and most important private. During my interview I learned these traits are what Jewish men look for in a companion. Modesty in the Jewish culture plays a role in relation to the way they dress, speak, act and live. Judaism rejects complete nudity in any area of their lives. Jewish faith believes those who recite prayer in the buff , are creating sin. They relate this in correlation with Adam and Eve, who, after committing the first sin realized they were naked and felt ashamed. (Lamn, 2013.) Jewish woman desires modesty in all forms ,especially in relation to their clothing. The typical Orthodox Jewish female wears garments that cover her elbows and knees. A lot of the woman cover their hair with a shawl, scarf or a kippa. With this being said, having a diverse knowledge in many cultures would allow for effective understanding when it came to taking care of a patient with these cultural beliefs. During the first three months of pregnancy, it is best that the couple not telling anyone of the pregnancy, even close family and friends.
Herodotus and Sima Qian were undoubtedly great historians due to their substantial advancements in history writing. Thomas R. Martin concludes that the link between Herodotus and Sima Qian is their common goal to create history as a guide to the past, and that the history they create is left up to individual interpretation. Although the time period, backgrounds, and situations between the two historians were vastly different, comparing both of their work is an opportunity to view the writing of history across cultures and around the world. Their ability to write intricate and lengthy histories during the time in which they lived and under the circumstances they faced make them great historians. The way they composed their material and shared it with the world should be recognized and accounted for.

Of nursing home staff interviewed in 2004, nearly 40% admitted to committing at least one psychologically abusive act toward a resident and 10% admitted to physically abusing a resident in the preceding year.[1] Not only are nursing home residents at risk of being abused by their caretakers but they are also at risk of being restrained, which may lead to a form of abuse. With five percent of the elderly population, or one to two million instances of elder abuse occurring yearly there is no doubt that elder abuse deserves serious consideration.[2]
The field of bioprinting, using 3D printing technology for producing live cells with extreme accuracy, could be the answer to many of the problems we as humans face in the medical field. It could be the end to organ waiting lists and an alternative for organ transplants. In 3D printing technology lies the potential to replace the testing of new drugs on animals. However, the idea of applying 3 dimensional printing to the health industry is still quite new and yet to have a major impact. Manufacturing working 3D organs remains an enormous challenge, but in theory could solve major issues present today.
Caregiver abuse is another issue that occurs in retirement homes which are also underreported. Caregiver abuse can be physical, verbal, emotional, neglect, financial and social. CTV staff of W5 had reported that fifteen-hundred cases of staff-to-residents abuse in nursing homes in Canada (Sourtzis & Bandera, 2015). The news channel mentions that the number of senior’s abuse and neglect cases is likely to be higher, based on those that do not report the abuse. One case they highlighted was the story of Margaret Warholm, a seventy-four-year old mother who was placed in Santa Maria Senior Citizen’s Home by her family. Her family had carefully selected this home to treat their mom’s spinal problems. When Margaret’s symptoms worsen, staff members were advised that she was to remain in bed and not be moved for any reason. One day, two staff members tried to move Margaret from her bed to a wheelchair. They dropped her on the floor and did not inform the family of the incident.
History is a story told over time. It is a way of recreating the past so it can be studied in the present and re-interpreted for future generations. Since humans are the sole beneficiaries of history, it is important for us to know what the purpose of history is and how historians include their own perspective concerning historical events. The purpose and perspective of history is vital in order for individuals to realise how it would be almost impossible for us to live out our lives effectively if we had no knowledge of the past. Also, in order to gain a sound knowledge of the past, we have to understand the political, social and cultural aspects of the times we are studying.
History class in itself has a specific purpose which seems to be frequently forgotten. We learn about violent and horrible events in our past, as well as life- changing and positively impacting ones. From the negative events, we learn what went wrong and how to prevent similar tragedies from happening. From the positive, we gather knowledge and comprehension of the basis of our modern society. We are a self- repairing race, analyzing every flaw and figuring out what caused it. It's an ancient practice, trial and error is human nature.
History should be studied for several somewhat obvious reasons. It provides us with the means
It is also significant for students to be taught that knowledge is greatly important to the human race. Lecturing is crucial when teaching, students not only need to be thinkers but objective thinkers. In order for students to be objective thinkers they must be given instruction to obtain the knowledge needed. All core areas of learning are equally important in building an objective individual that has can function well in society; such as science, math, reading, writing and humanities. There must be a balance.
