Anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) abuse has become a national concern among adolescent athletes and non-athletes. There has been a significant increase in the number of adolescents who use these performance-enhancement drugs since a decade back. These adolescents who use steroids believe that steroids help them appear more attractive and perform better at sports compared to their competitors, which makes them feel that they need to use steroids to boost themselves past the competition. The rates of steroid use was small (1.4%) among students, but use of steroids was higher among athletes in males (Lorang, et al 358). Some studies of health risks, focusing on anabolic steroid effects, state that body builders and athletes who use anabolic steroid doses at higher than therapeutic doses are at a great risk. Health risk data do exist from medical case studies on athletes. Side effects range from acne or fluid retention to mood swings, temporary sterility, cardiovascular disease, and liver disease. Some risks may be even greater for adolescent users because of their young age. Since some steroids
