By the end of the French and Indian War, they had lost all of their ability to control the Atlantic colonies. Before 1700, Great Britain had limited interest in American colonization. Virginia was the first territory in America to be claimed by the British. In the 1550’s, the island of Newfoundland was chartered as a colony. Sir Walter Raleigh founded the first settlement on Roanoke Island.

Sir Walter Raleigh obtained a patent from Queen Elizabeth I to found a colony in the New World (Encyclopedia Americana International Edition 1). In 1585, Sir Raleigh sent a few men to investigate the New World (Pavao 1). John White accompanied the explorations of Chesapeake Bay (Wolfe 1). The first English settlement was on its way to the New World. Raleigh’s cousin, Sir Richard Grenville, sent seven ships loaded with colonists to establish a colony (Strokes 1).

The History of Jamestown, Virginia In June of 1606, King James I granted a charter to a group of London entrepreneurs, the Virginia Company, to establish a English settlement in the Chesapeake region of North America. By December, 104 male settlers sailed from London instructed to settle Virginia, and find gold and a water route to the Orient. According to a list published by Captain John Smith, "Gentlemen" made up about half of the group, whose gentle birth suggests they knew nothing of or thought it their personal duty to tame a wilderness. The rest were artisans, artisans, and laborers. On May 13, 1607, the Virginia Company explorers chose to settle on Jamestown Island, along the James River 60 miles from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.

4.Roanoke Island— 12 mi (19 km) long and 3 mi (4.8 km) wide, off the NE coast of North Carolina between Albemarle and Pimlico sounds, site of the earliest English colony in North America. The first colonists, sent out by Sir Walter Raleigh landed in Aug. 1585 but returned to England in 1586. A second group, arriving in 1587, disappeared by the time additional supplies were brought from England in 1591. When Amadas and Barlowe returned a year later with two natives, Manteo and Wanchese, all of Britain was excited with talk of the New World and its wonders. Raleigh went to the Queen and asked permission to name the island Virginia in honor of her, "the Virgin Queen" in hopes she would give him more money for the exped... ... middle of paper ... ...n village but never did. Soon after, White came across a rough storm and was forced to return to England. Despite many attempts to return to Roanoke, White couldn't get the funding or resources to make the trip. Raleigh had finally given up hope of settlement and Jon White died many years later ignorant to the fate of his family and the colony.

It is said that just a couple months after the arrival of this colony, John White had gone back to England to resupply. While on his way back he ran in to Queen Elizabeth who wanted every ship in sight to fight off the Spanish Armada. He was stuck there for three years. When he finally returned to Roanoke Island there was no evidence that there even was a colony once there. The only clue as to where they went was the letters “CROATAN” carved on a nearby tree.

To understand, why Independence Day is most notable, we have to look at the events leading up to July 4, 1776 and the American Revolution. What is the motive behind our forefather’s rebellion against England? What events played a significant role in this revolution to independence? To find the motive, we have to go back to 1620 when the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. English settlers came to the new land to be free from the King’s Parliament.

The birth of an American nation began with the establishment of various colonies along the east approximately next to the abundant Atlantic Ocean. The colonies can be divided into 4 units. The colonies that settled in the New World were New England, Chesapeake, Middle Colonies, and the Carolinas. The European immigrants thought themselves as being the first inhabitants of the new nation, but were faced with a reality that Native Americans were already settled in the land. What was to come was years of hardship and war.

When most people think of the early settlement they think of the first successful settlement, Jamestown, but this was not the first settlement in the New World. The settlement at Roanoke was the first attempt to colonize the New World. The settlement at Roanoke is often referred to as the “Lost Colony” because of its unusual disappearance. The reason people often do not know about the first settlement at Roanoke is because it was abandoned, forgotten, and lost. The Roanoke settlement was located on an island on the northern coast of what is now North Carolina.

They fought over land with Indians for many years. The London Company, creation of the colony, and Indian wars all played a major role in the development of Jamestown. The London Company was founded for the exploration of Jamestown and to fund anything that had to do with it. The founders of the London Company believed that, in the Americas, existed precious metals (London Company). The main founder of the London Company was King James I from England who chartered the London Company to form a colony in North America.
