Secular Society 3 When the countries founding fathers put the Bill of Rights in place they included a two part clause in the First Amendment which states; "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" (Madison, et al., National Center for Constitutional Studies 2009). What does this mean exactly? How does it pertain to today‘s society? Is there a seperation of church and state? The words of the First Amendment have been hotly contested almost since it was enacted on March 4th, 1791.
