In July I will be traveling to Haiti on a mission trip. There are many diseases out there, but recently the Zika virus has made national and even global news by how quickly this disease is spreading from country to country. Haiti is among one of the many, many country’s and territories that the virus is currently in. Previous to 2015, the virus epidemics struck areas of Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Recently in May of 2015, the Pan American Health Organization first confirmed that Brazil had virus infection warning. Now there are many outbreaks occurring around the world and people are starting to take notice. Fortunately, the United States has no local-mosquito borne Zika Virus disease incidents reported, but there are travel-associated cases.
The Zika virus disease is caused by the Zika virus, which is transmitted to people through a bite of an Aedes species mosquito. It is common for most people to not even know they have it because they do not get sick enough to go to the hospital and people rarely dies of Zika. The common symptoms are fever, rash, conjunctivitis, and join pain, and they usually last for several days or a week after

Client and caregivers should be made aware that there is no cure for this virus and that it can have lasting effects during childbirth. Practitioners should definitely be aware of really any disease, especially ones that are a world problem, like the Zika. It can guide their clinical evaluations and of the disease itself so they know how to best treat their clients. I think this is useful for the general public because since it is a virus that is going to spread, with no cure, the public should know the preventative measures to help increase their changes of not getting the
What is zika or where does it come from? Many people wonder about zika and how it began. Zika is a mosquito from the Aedes species. When you are diagnosed with zika some of the common symptoms are, a fever, a rash, pain in the joints, and red eyes. The symptoms of zika usually last a few days to a week, but thing about zika is that it’s not an infection that you would know you have been infected with, but zika is very effective for pregnant women. If you're pregnant and have zika then your baby will be born with microcephaly. Microcephaly is a disease that makes the baby have a smaller head than normal. The zika virus was first discovered in 1947 in Uganda.
Nonetheless there is nothing we can do yet to cure this virus because there is no vaccine, furthermore there are no signs of vaccine being made at all. In order to fight the Zika virus one of the most important operations is to provide a certain amount of funds to laboratories. The only source of money that could be possible to use, is the budget that the government of the United States would contribute to laboratories, scientists, tests, expeditions and researches. However it comes as no surprise that the government, especially Republican Congress is in disfavor to spend more money on these investigations. It has long been known that the Republican Party doesn’t like spending money on public needs and involvement of the government. According to the article “Health Officials Urge Congress to Fund Zika Research” by Donald G. McNeil it says: “President Obama has asked for $1.8
From the article “6 Ways to Avoid Getting Bitten by a Zika Virus Mosquito, by Kelsey Kloss” it indicates there are precisely six steps. The first step is the consumer must buy a specific kind of mosquito repellent. “The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends products with active ingredients DEET, oil of lemon eucalyptus, picaridin, or IR 3535.” (Kloss, Kelsey 1). The second step is to apply the repellent on the surface of your body properly. The third step is to not wear revealing clothing; therefore, it will be more difficult for the mosquitoes to bite you since your skin isn’t exposed. The fourth step is to “prep your home” meaning mosquitoes tend to die in chilly environments for perhaps it’s in our best interest to keep our homes at a reasonable but frosty temperature. Mosquitoes also like areas that have shade and damp areas, for this reason, is that mosquitoes tend to breed in certain habitats with those characteristics, like swamps, jungles, and other humid areas. The fifth step is to exercise indoors, thus you’re not vulnerable. And the final step is to travel intelligently, obviously not traveling to infected
A pregnant European woman was found to have the symptoms of Zika virus while an ultrasonographic examinations was performed. The examination showed brain calcification and a small head which is most probably microcephaly. These symptoms are closely related with the
The article is about how the Zika virus has reached Ontario from the first time. A Canadian citizen travelling back from Columbia brought it over and has now been in contact with their health care providers. This is not the first time the virus has come into Canada there has been a few cases in Alberta, B.C. and Quebec. It is unlikely that many Canadians will be infected with the virus, but knowing that this dangerous virus has crossed our border has many worried.
Sally is amongst the most wonderful mothers I have ever known. She begins each morning – rain-or-shine, lively-or-sick – at three o’clock sharp, when the late night grasshopper chirps are mixed with those of the early birds’. Now, she doesn’t arrive at work until nine and only spend thirty minutes getting herself freshened-up, dressed, and fed. So where does all of her remaining time go? The short answer is: Sally is devoted to singlehandedly preparing her daughter for each day ahead. No lack of congratulations is welcomed for her nor the thousands of mothers who struggle with the same tasks of caring for their infants. Like other mothers, Sally wakes, bathes, dresses, feeds, and prepares a list of items that her daughter will need at the
In the novel, Mountains by Mountains is about a doctor that devotes his life to helping patients in Haiti. Haiti is one of the poorest nations in the world. America is concerned with the public safety of all citizens. For instance, Americans killing Creole pigs because of swine flu. The swine flu would affect America’s pork industry and harm the population.
A few days ago, the first case of the Zika virus discovered in Dallas, Texas. The Zika virus is spread by mosquitos and can be contracted through sexual contact with an infected individual. Prior to this incident, experts were not able to tell whether the virus could be contracted through sex. Some major symptoms of the virus include joint aches, skin rash, fever and reddened eyes. According to William E. Scheweizer, only “1 out of 5 people” will display these virus symptoms. Many birth defects are also linked to the Zika virus, including a condition where infants are born with extremely small heads. In hopes of detecting early signs of the Zika virus, doctors have started to screen pregnant women. They also
One of the health incidents that has occurred recently, given the summer months season, is the concern with the Zika virus. Although the Zika virus has minimal effect on the average person, the greater concern is with pregnant women and the affects to the unborn child. Devastating enough, the inability to prevent other issues, such as due pregnancy. According to CDC, “Zika infection during pregnancy can cause a serious birth defect of the brain called microcephaly, and is linked to other problems in fetuses and infants infected with Zika before birth”.
There are currently 40 emerging infectious diseases, that are at risk of spreading from country to country, due to the increase of people traveling. Diseases like Ebola and the Zika virus pose a global threat due to the possible rapid rate of transmission from human-to-human, that occurs with exposure to someone who is symptomatic and seropositive (World Health Organization, 2016-a). When there is an infectious disease breakout, public health practitioners and physicians, must make quick decisions regarding isolation of a patient exhibiting symptoms and using quarantine for those who have been exposed to someone symptomatic or seropositive. Although, a public health framework is followed to make the decisions for isolation and
There is a chance that Zika virus could become established in North American wildlife because of the rapid increase in the two invasive species of mosquito, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which are mainly accountable for the spread of zika virus in the Americas. However, Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause a serious birth defect called microcephaly and other severe brain defects. Also, A pregnant woman can pass Zika to her fetus during pregnancy or around the time of birth. Additionally, a person with Zika can pass it to his or her sex partners. People who have traveled to or live in places with Zika should be encouraged to protect themselves by preventing mosquito bites and sexual transmission of Zika.

The main symptoms patients have, are mild fever and a rash. There are also complications like muscle pain, joint pain, headache, pain behind the eyes, and conjunctivitis. People are also likely to not have any symptoms at all. If a woman is pregnant and is or was affected with Zika the child is going to have microcephaly. Microcephaly is a child’s brain that fails to grow to its normal size. Other people with Zika lose the ability to walk and they need to be put in a mechanical ventilator. A mechanical ventilator is a device that helps patients breathe by assisting breathing in and out. Because Zikas symptoms are not to bad, it is not hard to treat them. How the immune system reacts to is the response’s role in nerve related
For the purpose of this paper we will discuss the Zika Virus; a worldwide public health crisis. The Zika Virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito and the symptoms experienced are usually mild if any at all. Unfortunately, the Zika Virus can also be transmitted from a pregnant woman to her fetus potentially causing microcephaly; a birth defect in which an infant is born with an abnormally small head size which can in turn cause other developmental problems depending on the severity (CDC, 2016). Concern about the Zika Virus is not new, nor is caution when traveling to an area of the world where a Zika outbreak has recently occurred; however, the prevalence of the Zika Virus is spreading. Prior to 2015 known outbreaks were contained to certain areas in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands, in mid-2015 the first confirmed case of Zika virus infections were announced in Brazil and has since spread throughout the Americas (CDC,
