In July I will be traveling to Haiti on a mission trip. There are many diseases out there, but recently the Zika virus has made national and even global news by how quickly this disease is spreading from country to country. Haiti is among one of the many, many country’s and territories that the virus is currently in. Previous to 2015, the virus epidemics struck areas of Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Recently in May of 2015, the Pan American Health Organization first confirmed that Brazil had virus infection warning. Now there are many outbreaks occurring around the world and people are starting to take notice. Fortunately, the United States has no local-mosquito borne Zika Virus disease incidents reported, but there are travel-associated cases.
The Zika virus disease is caused by the Zika virus, which is transmitted to people through a bite of an Aedes species mosquito. It is common for most people to not even know they have it because they do not get sick enough to go to the hospital and people rarely dies of Zika. Client and caregivers should be made aware that there is no cure for this virus and that it can have lasting effects during childbirth. Practitioners should definitely be aware of really any disease, especially ones that are a world problem, like the Zika. It can guide their clinical evaluations and of the disease itself so they know how to best treat their clients. I think this is useful for the general public because since it is a virus that is going to spread, with no cure, the public should know the preventative measures to help increase their changes of not getting the
