Zaabalawi Research Essay A parable is a very short, simple story. It focuses on one main character. The parable story teaches a life lesson. It has a moral, spiritual, ethical, philosophical or political viewpoint which tends to combine reality with surreality. A parable is also about the impossible, fantastic, supernatural. Some examples of parables are “The Sower and the Seed”, “The Bride’s Girlfriends”, “The Prodigal Son”, “Before the Law”, and “Zaabalawi”. He is the person “who practiced law in the religious courts”(Mahfouz.1). At other words, he only works for his benefit. When the protagonist asks about him want to see the Sheikh Qamar, these are a beautiful lady “with a most intoxicating was leaving it”( 1), and the man who received protagonist had a smile on his face and he told him to sit in these “a fine leather-upholstered chair”(1). He gave protagonist very warm, welcoming look and that gives into the protagonist mind that his aspect protagonist for his client. The protagonist is so embarrassed because he thinks that he is just wasting Sheikh Qamar costly time. Mahfouz describes the lawyer, Sheikh Qamar, as “ the man wore a long suit and was smoking a cigar; his manner of setting was that of someone well satisfied both with himself and with his worldly possessions” (1). He is a rich guy who had lots of money with costly carpets which the narrator sinks his feet into. Every other person wants to be like him because he wears expensive clothes and smokes costly cigars and acts as though he is inspired. When the protagonist starts talking with him, he realizes that protagonist is not for his economic benefit, and he kicks him out and says he hasn’t seen Zaabalawi from very long time. The protagonist was about to explain about why he was there and what he need. He tells him to sit and have some drink. Protagonist opens his mouth to make an excuse, but he stops him with his ears. He said “Not a word till you do what I say”(4). He wants to set the protagonist with him and have a drink. The protagonist agrees to do so, but he said you have to permit me ask one question. They both started having their drink, after second drink the protagonist felt deep sleepy. He saw a dream in his dress he saw beautiful trees with the sky was nothing but stars seen between the entwined branches. When he wakes up from sleep, he saw Wanas with his question. The protagonist asked him about he might know about Zaabalawi he said he don't know him now. He said Zaabalawi was there and he left. After he know Zaabalawi was there before he collapses on the table and cried a lot. Wanas answered him very sympatically ways that if you meet Zaabalawi he will definitely cure his illness.
