Acting as a “Normal” Man The book of Confessions of a Mask is written by Yukio Mishima. This book is talked about Kochan, who is a homosexual, he always wears a mask and act like a normal man in front of his friends or women; he learns to mimic the inherent qualities of “normal” individuals by his peers, but he fails to do so at the end. He is able to appreciate the feminine beauty whole, but not being sexually aroused by that woman. There have some examples to prove that he is a homosexual and he has no lust with women. Although Kochan is a homosexual man, but he is still “into” woman’s beauty, which he acts as a normal man who likes woman. One of the women who makes Kochan appreciates the beauty of feminine is his cousin – Sumiko. But, Kochan has no any sexual desire for her. In the book of Confessions of a Mask, Kochan stated that: “Sumiko’s front teeth protrude the tinier bit. Kochan picks an ugly woman for sex. When they touch the tips of their tongues, Kochan states, “Perhaps I will not understand when I say there is a numbness that resembles fierce pain. I felt my entire body becoming paralyzed with just such a pain, a pain that was intense, but still could not be felt at all. I dropped my head onto the pillow. Ten minutes later there was no doubt of my incapacity.” (Mishima 226) You can see that Kochan goes to a prostitute in attempts to accustom his body to heterosexuality. However, he fails that it doesn’t work and it shows Kochan’s pain. His male genitalia have problems or it cannot erect when he has sex with the ugly woman.
