Video games have been a point of discussion among all ages for decades. This debate “continues among psychologists and other health professionals regarding the effects of violent media on youth” (Bowen) and has caused must discussion in the media world. Some scholars have tried to argue the concept that playing violent video games translates to brutality in the real world. The idea is that by allowing children to murder and assault people in video games, it creates the idea that they are allowed to do it in real life. Micahel Gallagher from US News and World Report says that, “The myth that video games cause violent behavior is undermined by scientific research and common sense. According to FBI statistics, youth violence has declined in recent years as computer and video game popularity soared. We do not claim that the increased popularity of games caused the decline, but the evidence makes a mockery of the suggestion that video games cause violent behavior”…show more content…
According to the data found in this study, “they found that the gaming group had a rise in gray matter in the right hippocampus, right prefrontal cortex and the cerebellum — areas of the brain responsible for spatial navigation, memory formation, strategic planning and fine motor skills in the hands” (Gaurani). Direct, physical change was seen in a person’s brain who plays video games. In the same study, it was concluded that video games could possibly be used as therapy for medical patients with schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder and Alzheimer’s which are all caused by parts of the brain being smaller than normal.
