Throughout the world and societies many children use technology; children use it in various ways including listening to music, watching television and social media. Although social media which is defined as websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking (Oxforddictionaries.com, 2014) is a useful tool, it also has hidden effects on children’s mental health which is defined as a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community (Hunter Institute of Mental Health, 2010). Children’s mental health gets impacted in different ways; cyberbullying and body image are a couple examples. As social media usage is on the increase it’s important to understand that it has positive and negative aspects. Positive aspects include: academic achievement and play and social interactions. Negative aspects include: cyberbullying and privacy concerns. In addition it is also important to understand what parents want in their children’s education about cyber safety and also what implications social media usage has on teachers. Thus, social media usage in children is increasing at a rapid rate; there are positive and negative aspects of social media usage, the social media impact on children’s mental health, what parents want their children to know about cyber-safety and implications on teachers. In today’s society our children are getting access to a wider range of technology including social media at a younger age.
