Yellow Journalism and Mass Media
It is the news that informs us of the events that change our lives and entertains us when we are seeking something to do. Journalism has been the staple of American life for quite some time and will probably keep the same effect for years to come. Journalism has also changed many lives in American
History. Furthermore, I leave you with my essay on the the hype of the early ninteen hundreds; the infamous Yellow Press.
Basically, Yellow Journalism was the given name to mass media in the early eighteenth century. It consisted of cartoons, illustrations, catchy stories, and things that appealed to the readers interests and values(Mass Media 1).
Sometimes the contents were fraudulent and emphasized tragedies. These types of contents sold papers in great volumes and created a large profit for such papers as the “New York World” and the “Journal.”(Century 168)
The owner of the “New York Journal” and the overall founder of yellow journalism itself was of the name Joseph Pulitzer. Pulitzer immigrated to the
United States from Hungary(Pulitzer 1). Early on in his career he worked as a reporter where he picked up most of his journalism skills. News is the communication of selected information on current events. It is shared in various ways: among individuals and small groups; with wider audiences; or in ways that blend those traits. Before modern technology came to help news to be broadcasted worldwide, even before the printing press started to produce newspapers, it was disseminated by town criers. People would have not known what is happening.
McCarthyism and the Media The Cold War ushered in a new era in the American society that would change the way in which everyday life was carried on by the public. Men, women and children were convinced to fit the “average” mold that was promoted through propaganda issued by the American government and media. Events, such as the McCarthy hearings and Hollywood Blacklisting, contributed to the overwhelming fear of nonconformity. The American public was bombarded with images of conformity, such as the popular “family sitcoms” that were mass produced in the 1950’s.

The hidden secret of Miss Strangeworth leaves everyone speechless. Within the short story “The Possibility of Evil” written by Shirley Jackson, the main character, Miss Strangeworth, has a secret that no one would have expected for a seemingly nice elderly lady. In Miss Strangeworth’s down time, she secretly writes cruel and inconsiderate letters to people within her town. These actions would label Miss Strangeworth as a bully. The unbearable letters she writes, the way she goes about them, and her love and dedication for writing them proves that she is very much a bully.
Racism and discrimination continue to be a prevalent problem in American society. Although minorities have made significant strides toward autonomy and equality, the images in media, specifically television, continue to misrepresent and manipulate the public opinion of blacks. It is no longer a blatant practice upheld by the law and celebrated with hangings and beatings, but instead it is a subtle practice that is perceived in the entertainment and media industries. Whether it’s appearing in disparaging roles or being negatively portrayed in newscasts, blacks continue to be the victims of an industry that relies on old ideas to appeal to the majority. The viscous cycle that is the unconscious racism of the media continues to not only be detrimental to the white consumers, who base what they know about blacks by what is represented in television, but also the black consumers, who grow up with a false sense of identity.
The play “A Raisin in the Sun” was written by Lorraine Hansberry marking her first ever written play. Lorraine Hansberry was the first African American woman to write a play that was to be produced on Broadway. Although a brilliant writer, Hansberry’s opportunities of writing were cut short when she died at the age of thirty-five from cancer. Lorraine lived from 1930 to 1965, dying on the day that Broadway closed her second play, “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window”. “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window” was written in 1964, only 5 years later than “A Raisin in the Sun” which was written in 1959. In “Reporting the News” by George C. Edwards III, Martin P. Wattenberg, and Robert L. Lineberry, the main idea is how the media determines what to air, where to get said stories that will air, how the media presents the news, and the medias effect on the general public. “Reporting The News” is a very strong and detailed article. The authors’ purpose is to inform the readers of what goes on in the news media. This can be inferred by the authors’ tone. The authors’ overall tone is critical of the topics that are covered. The tone can be determined by the authors’ strong use of transitions, specific examples, and phrases or words that indicate analysis. In Amusing Ourselves to Death, by Neil Postman, ?the news of the day? is viewed as ?a figment of our technological imagination? (7-8). He states that without the media to broadcast the events that take place daily, there would not be the concept of ?the news of the day? (7). Postman says that the news only exists because of our advanced systems of communication, making it possible for us to report the news to the public as it happens. Without these methods and tools, news would not exist the way it does. This is what Postman is implying when he mentions that the news is a ?media event? (8). He goes on by saying that ?we attend to fragments of events from all over the world because we have multiple media,? to convey his arguments of how ?Huxley...was right? (vii).
Character Analysis of Mrs. Mallard in Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour Mrs. Mallard Chopn’s main character in “The Story of an Hour”, has under gone the loss of her husband Mr. Mallard. The story depicts that she has been contemplating through different feeling about the situation. Mrs. Mallard may start off as a timed wife, however through the death of her husband sorrow and sadness turns to freedom and respite.
“Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte is a novel about an orphan girl growing up in a tough condition and how she becomes a mature woman with full of courage. Her life at Gateshead is really difficult, where she feels isolated and lives in fear in her childhood. Her parents are dead when she was little, her dead uncle begged his evil wife, Mrs. Reed, to take care of Jane until she becomes an adult. But Mrs. Reed does not keep her promise, no one treats Jane like their family members even treats her less than a servant. By the end of this essay it will be proven that Jane’s life at Gateshead has shaped her development as a young woman and bildungsroman.
Why should donald trump get so much attention when the bottom of the society is so corrupted. a black teen shoted by the police, young innocent guy died without knowing what happened. He was shot from the back before having a chance to dropped his air-soft gun. He just got graduated from high school, having a wonderful time with family, but because of his skin color is black that gives us the privilege to shoot him and say we are just self defencing? In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice the reader is exposed to many major characters such as Elizabeth, Mr. Bennet, Mrs. Bennet, Mr. Darcy, and Charles Bingley, but there are also minor characters that are important to the story too. Throughout Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen uses these minor characters to play significant roles in the lives of the main characters as well as play a symbol of certain themes. The entire novel is filled with many key characters that add to either the story or to the characters personalities and perspectives. Three minor characters that play a small, but significant role in the outcome of many events in Pride and Prejudice are Charlotte Lucas, Lady Catherine, and Miss Bingley. There are two types of propaganda: sociological propaganda; the spreading of an ideology through the mass media, and political propaganda; efforts that are sponsored by governments and political groups that alter a persons’ interests. All propaganda has a direction, and the overall quality determines whether it will have a positive or negative effect over the masses. Our entire nation is a vast propaganda operational system that is greatly linked to education, consumerism and politics. A great deal of what makes up propaganda and how it is placed among the masses lies in understanding the overall emotional and physical states of these groups of people and in finding a way to draw a persons’ attention to capture their hearts, breaking down any such persons cognizance and any reasoning behind it.
