Recommended: compare and contrast the education system in USA and Japan

American schools are running out of time. While Japan excels in math and science, America falls behind. After a summer break in America, it can take teachers up to 6 weeks to review what students have learned the year before. Implementing a year round school schedule will help close the gap between America and foreign countries and will benefit the people because it increases the number of students a school can accommodate, makes it easier for families to take advantage of breaks, and it may increase retention in students.

According to the WCPSS, a school that runs on a year round schedule can accommodate 20-33% more students than a school on a normal schedule. The way that a year round school schedule works is that a grade level is divided into 4 groups. When one group is on a break, the three other groups are in school. This rotates as so only 3 groups are in school at any given time. This means that more students can be accommodated and that schools can be more efficient.

Opponents to year round schooling may argue that it increases costs for states because of additional air conditioning, heating, electricity, and food costs caused by the new schedule. Air conditioning and heating costs are increased by having school during the winter and summer, when traditional schools are on break. Electricity costs are increased because of the money it takes to run the school more frequently, and food costs increase because the school has to prepare more food for more students.
