I was captivated by the art piece created by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes in 1810- 1823, titled “Y no hai Remedio (And There’s Nothing to Be Done)” from Devastation of War, medium being Etching, dry point, burin, and burnisher, as well, as prints, drawings, and photography. I found the painting’s depiction successfully showcased the sobering penalties of the cost in battle between French troops and Spanish civilians. The astonishingly brilliant artist Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes has always been revered and adored for his incredible paintings of the Spanish Royal family, but not many know that he was also a masterful engraver. In the exhibit titled Renaissance to Goya: Prints and Drawings from Spain, many of the pieces displayed were based on social commentary of the period within the country. This disdain is particularly palpable in the etching by Goya titled The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters. The psychological and emotional state of Goya at the time is masterfully rendered and the presentation of the exhibit is absolutely remarkable due to its brilliant color scheme and expert presentation of the works.
The further right you look in the painting, you see the enormous line of the Spanish waiting to die. The town is slightly illuminated, and the sky is dark. These are things I believe were added for a realistic feeling, but were not what Goya was trying to express in this painting.

Guernica is one of Pablo Picasso’s most well-known paintings in the world. It was created in response to the bombing of Guernica by German and Italian warplanes on April 26 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. The intention that Picasso had was to depict the scenes of the tragedies of the war and the loss of innocent lives. This terrible event was shown to us in the painting as Picasso utilized a number of symbolic images through the helplessness of the many faces and how war brings upon destruction and grief.
This painting is classified as a romanticism painting as the artist has one job and that is to convey his point in his audience. Looking at the piece it has an equally balance of positive and negative space, the negative space being the dark black background in which Saturn looks like he emerging from it. The positive space is Saturn himself, which is where the emphasis is. In doing this, Goya was very successful in getting his message across that this was a dark time.

It is very possible that if I had not been raised with a religious background or had not taken my art history class, my perspective towards the painting would be very different. I might look at the painting and simply see a man about to be killed. I might not see the sacrificial element of it. My understanding of art and the language of art would be lacking. Without the knowledge of these things I would probably see a more general picture, and I might have missed the aspects of Goya's masterpiece that make the painting so moving to me.
