In Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights Bronte infuses hatred into a powerful love story. The love in Wuthering Heights is stronger than death, but the characters also portray a hatred in the novel that evokes even stronger emotions in both the reader and the characters. In the first part of the novel, Heathcliff and Catherine’s love is prevalent, but when Catherine marries Edgar Linton, Heathcliff is motivated to get revenge on all those whom he believes have wronged him. Not only does hatred fill the novel, but hatred also fills Heathcliff, however, the hatred is essential as it gives him a chance at redemption. The “minor” characters in part two of the novel are actually not minor at all, but are rather crucial characters needed to lead Heathcliff through his attempts at revenge to reach redemption.
Cathy Linton, Edgar Linton and Catherine’s child, is essential to Heathcliff’s transformation he experiences towards the end of the novel. Part two of Wuthering Heights begins with the first years of Cathy’s life just after Catherine’s death. Cathy’s life gives Heathcliff a second opportunity to love. However, Heathcliff hates Cathy and does not try to form a relationship with his late lover’s daughter, but instead he uses her in his attempted revenge upon Edgar Linton. To illustrate his seriousness to get revenge against Edgar, Heathcliff “shut and locked [the door] also” (253). Heathcliff locks Cathy and Nelly in a room at Wuthering Heights to force Cathy to marry Linton to complete his revenge upon Edgar Linton. Heathcliff’s forced marriage of Linton and Cathy completes his vengeful plan against Edgar rather than leaving his plan frayed and unfinished.

When Linton Heathcliff’s son returns to Wuthering Heights Heathcliff tells Nelly “[his] design is honest as possible…that the two cousins may fall in love and get married. [he is] acting generously to [her] master: his young chit has no expectations, and should [Catherine]second [his] wish she’ll be provided for at once as joint successor with Linton. Although Heathcliff creates a divide within the family due to his arrival, Cathy is seen to gain a friend with whom she feels she has an affinity both physically, spiritually and mentally, which will become increasingly evident as the novel progresses. However, this alliance throughout the novel is frequently thrown into turmoil by outside influences or factors. As we are informed from the onset, the "greatest punishment" that could be bestowed upon Cathy was separation from Heathcliff. & nbsp; Cathy and Heathcliff's separation only therefore ensues as a result of their initial outing to Thrushcross Grange. Their promise to grow up together as 'rude as savages,' is destroyed when Cathy and Heathcliff are separated physically by many factors resulting from this visitation. From the beginning of the novel and most likely from the beginning of Heathcliff's life, he has suffered pain and rejection. When Mr. Earnshaw brings him to Wuthering Heights, he is viewed as a thing rather than a child. Mrs. Earnshaw was ready to fling it out the doors, while Nelly put it on the landing of the stairs hoping that it would be gone the next day. Without having done anything to deserve rejection, Heathcliff is made to feel like an outsider. Following the death of Mr. Earnshaw, Heathcliff suffers cruel mistreatment at the hands of Hindley. In these tender years, he is deprived of love, friendship, and education, while the treatment from jealous Hindley is barbaric and disrupts his mental balance. He is separated from the family, reduced to the status of a servant, undergoes regular beatings and forcibly separated from his soul mate, Catherine. The personality that Heathcliff develops in his adulthood has been formed in response to these hardships of his childhood.
Heathcliff cried vehemently, "I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul!" Emily Brontë distorts many common elements in Wuthering Heights to enhance the quality of her book. One of the distortions is Heathcliff's undying love for Catherine Earnshaw. Also, Brontë perverts the vindictive hatred that fills and runs Heathcliff's life after he loses Catherine. Finally, she prolongs death, making it even more distressing and insufferable.
The complicated nature surrounding Heathcliff’s motives again adds an additional degree of ambiguity to his character. This motivation is primarily driven by Catherine’s marriage to Edgar and past rejection of Heathcliff, since he was a servant whom Hindley disapproved of. Prior to storming out of Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff overhears Catherine say, “It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now…” (Brontë 87). The obstacles that ultimately prevent Heathcliff from marrying Catherine provide insight into Heathcliff’s desire to bring harm to Edgar and Hindley. The two men play prominent roles in the debacle, Edgar as the new husband and Hindley as the head figure who refused Heathcliff access to Catherine. Following this incident, Catherine says, “Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same…” (Brontë 87). Catherine’s sentiment indicates she truly would rather be with Heathcliff, but the actions of others have influenced her monumental decision to marry Edgar. Heathcliff determination for revenge Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte is not an actual love story; it is built on revenge and not on love. Love is weaker than revenge. In this story, Heathcliff spend most of his time planning his revenge instead of going after Catherine, who he loves. Being deeply in love with someone should show some kind of happiness for one another instead of seeking revenge. Heathcliff dedication for revenge is greater than the love he has for Catherine. An innocence gypsy boy grows up with the Earnshaw. As he grows up the Earnshaw and Linton families mistreat Heathcliff for so long. Revenge. Only shows us that getting back at everyone at any cost is better than being in love, plus love is for the weak and revenge is for the strong. Heathcliff has a grudge on the two families and is determined for vengeance sooner or later.

Having grown up at Wuthering Heights, Catherine, Hindley, and Heathcliff all suffer from a lack of love and structure. Wuthering Heights is a very bleak and dark place, that isn’t too happy. None of them found happiness until they fled from that dreary place that they call home. Heathcliff is grumpy and mean, and wants to inflict that on everyone else around him. Hurt people, hurt people. As opposed to Thrushcross Grange, which is more structured. Edgar and Isabella are more compassionate people, because of the love that they received from their parents. It also leaves them vulnerable to Catherine and Heathcliff’s aggressive nature, as well as a ploy in Heathcliff’s plan. Knowing this, Catherine is only stuck with two options-marry Heathcliff or Edgar. Based on the decision she made (good or bad, depending on the person) it started a spiral of events that currently effects Linton, Hareton, and Cathy. The same thing is to be said about Cathy. Cathy is still in the same environment. Though she is growing up at Thrushcross Grange, and be raised by her father and Nelly. Wuthering Heights is a novel which deviates from the standard of Victorian literature. The novels of the Victorian Era were often works of social criticism. They generally had a moral purpose and promoted ideals of love and brotherhood. Wuthering Heights is more of a Victorian Gothic novel; it contains passion, violence, and supernatural elements (Mitchell 119). The world of Wuthering Heights seems to be a world without morals. In Wuthering Heights, Brontë does not idealize love; she presents it realistically, with all its faults and merits. She shows that love is a powerful force which can be destructive or redemptive. Heathcliff has an all-consuming passion for Catherine. When she chooses to marry Edgar, his spurned love turns into a destructive force, motivating him to enact revenge and wreak misery. The power of Heathcliff’s destructive love is conquered by the influence of another kind of love. Young Cathy’s love for Hareton is a redemptive force. It is her love that brings an end to the reign of Heathcliff.
He was treated poorly as a child and was raised to have a negative outlook on life, inspiring his permanently disagreeable adult personality. This continued state of negative being can be seen in other characters as well. His early life is similar to Cathy Linton’s in the sense that she parallels her mother, Catherine, since she was born to her and is treated like her. She is born to have her specific characteristics, but also grows in a situation in which her household treats her like Catherine. Both Heathcliff and Cathy are destined for their lifestyles, as their pasts are not due to their personal actions. This can also be seen in Linton Heathcliff, who is perpetually weak from birth. Although Heathcliff attempts to raise him to be abusive, he fails, and Linton remains a wailing brat. This shows that the effects of childhood last long into adulthood, and what is established in early life cannot be
