Recommended: influence of tobacco advertising

In this assignment, I would like to discuss about the Indian Government’s policy on banning tobacco advertisement. There are four main points in my essay which are the ideas supporting the ban, the ideas against the ban, the conflict between two parties and my personal solutions.

Firstly, why do people in favor of the policy on banning tobacco advertisement in India? According to the survey, the negative effects of tobacco on public health is alarming as there are more and more deaths caused by tobacco consumption. In World Health Organization’s research, “tobacco accounted for over 3 million deaths in 1990,” and the number of deaths caused by tobacco can rise to “8.4 million in 2020 and to 10 million in about 2030.” We all know smoking is more common in adults, however, the serious problem is that children and young adults are being attracted by tobacco. In the USA, 14-24 years old teenagers are described as “tomorrow’s cigarette business” as they are making the contribution to the revenue of the smoking industry. That is the reason why any colorful tobacco advertisements are banned as those advertisements might be the threat to induce the young generations into smoking habits. Moreover, the supporters of this ban argue that the government spends more money each year on health care than the revenue brought into the economy by the tobacco companies as it is shown that “cigarettes contributed only 0.14% of the G.D.P and the health costs roughly translated to 0.21% of the G.D.P.” Furthermore, they also declare that if people don’t spend money on smoking, the money will not disappear from the industry. Instead it is spent on other meaningful purposes which may result in making more jobs and help to reduce the unemployment rate.

...roblems caused by smoking put a serious burden on the health care system, then the government should put more tax on tobacco products and higher tax for foreign brands. Therefore, people will consider about how much it costs when they smoke and this may discourage their demand for smoking. Besides, the cost for the health care related to smoking should be charged more so that people will try to stay away from smoking, which may save them a large amount of money.

In conclusion, there are both agreement and disagreement to the idea of banning the advertisements from tobacco companies. There are no complete solutions, as the result, the government should try to find way to balance between the benefit brought by those companies and the money they spend on the healthcare system.

With all the other causes of deaths, alcohol, illegal drugs, AIDS, suicide, transportation accidents, fires, and guns, cigarettes still count for more deaths than those do combined. We can’t stand and watch people die because they smoke cigarettes. Thousands of smokers try to rid themselves of cigarettes but can't because of additive nicotine. Nicotine was recently declared addictive by the Food and Drug Administration, which explains why many smokers continue to smoke despite the health warnings on cigarette smoking. Nicotine makes it almost impossible for cigarette smokers to quit smoking because of its addictive nature, and with the cigarette manufacturers putting just enough nicotine in the so they cant be outlawed. The benefits of outlawing cigarettes greatly outnumber the disadvantages, for example, many scientists believe a link between smoking and a shortened life span exists between the two, a ban on cigarettes could increase life spans. Many studies suggest that billions of dollars now spent on smoking related. Smoking related illnesses could be reduced by outlawing cigarettes, families could save money by not purchasing cigarettes, and accidental fires costing millions of dollars caused by cigarettes would stop. Although a complete ban on cigarettes currently remains almost impossible, several organizations recently helped create a bill that could control cigarettes much in the same way the government now controls drugs. One such organization, the Food and Drug Administration, headed by David Kesslar drafted a major part, which would require manufacturers to disclose the 700 chemical additives in cigarettes, reduce the level of harmful chemicals, require cigarette companies to warn of the addictive nicotine, restrict tobacco advertising and promotion, and control the level of nicotine cigarettes contain.
