We live in a time where society is constantly evolving. Every day brings new elements that factor into families as they do their best to raise their children. In today’s world children and families face many issues combined with other obstacles that will shift, shape and challenge the families’ ability to provide some of the most basic necessities. Some of the issues presented are controllable and unfortunately others are not. Each issue faced by the family is influenced greatly on predetermined factors in collaboration with the ever changing economy. Three of the most pressing issues faced by families and children today are poverty, abuse and neglect within the family and affordable child care.
Poverty is a major stressor in the family dynamic. Poverty is greatly influenced by the economy and combined with the educational level and socioeconomic status before having children. In today’s economy those who are in Poverty are among families in which parents only have a high school education, had children earlier (possibly among their teen years) and have been hit harder with the struggle our economy is in. Poverty within these families influences the overall behavior of the family, parental relationships and social and cognitive development of children. Parents become consumed with trying to provide for the family, even in terms of the most basic necessities. Some of the most basic necessities in danger for families who are living in poverty are: food, clothing, home and transportation. A family in poverty is more likely to be living check to check and left with no room for any type of emergency (e.g. health care, car breaking down, accidents). ...ne universal solution to fix all of the issues we see. Families and children who face poverty, child abuse /neglect and the challenges of affordable child care are not alone with these issues. There are many people who face these problems but we as educators, future educators, community members and human being can make a difference in the outcomes of the issues families’ face, by providing support in many forms to aid in relieving some of the stressors (issues). By educating those in poverty as a result of educational background, by working together to find solutions and support for those who are facing abuse and neglect and by raising the standards in quality that we as people provide when taking care of our children or the children of those around us. Working together will enhance positive solution sin building the foundations for these families to be successful.
It is not difficult to document that poor children suffer a disproportionate share of deprivation, hardship, and bad outcomes. More than 16 million children in the United States – 22% of all children – live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level – $23,550 a year for a family of four. (Truman, 2005) Living in poverty rewires children 's brains and reports show that it produces prolonged effects. Also, growing up in a community with dangerous streets, gangs, confused social expectations, discouraging role models, and few connections to outsiders commanding resources becomes a burden for any child. The concern about the number of children living in poverty arises from our knowledge of the problems children face because of poverty.
Child welfare system was originated with the goals that social workers would try and alleviate poverty and its impact; however as the years have passed, the child welfare system turned into a child protection system directed toward investigating abuse and neglect, and removing children from families and placing them in foster care, and is no longer prepared to assist in resolving the problems of child poverty (Lindsey, 2004). There are multiple causes of why a family or individual can fall into poverty, which includes but is not limited to, disability, unemployment, age, and recessions, as we have seen through the 2008 recession and the Great Depression. Throughout this paper, I will address poverty as a social problem and its causes. I will also focus on how children and family households headed by single mothers are affected by poverty, and how Temporary Assistance for Needy Families came about to help children and families in poverty. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2014 African Americans held the highest poverty rate of 26%, with Hispanics holding the second highest rate at 24% (DeNavas-Walt & Proctor, 2015). When comparing this to the poverty rates of Whites at 10% and Asians at 12% in 2014, we see that in America, racial and ethnic minorities are more vulnerable to experiencing poverty (DeNavas-Walt & Proctor, 2015). In addition, discrimination is seen between genders among those living in poverty. Family households of a single adult are more likely to be headed by women and are also at a greater risk for poverty (DeNavas-Walt & Proctor, 2015). In 2014, 30.6% of households headed by a single woman were living below the poverty line compared to 15.7% for households headed by a single male (DeNavas-Walt & Proctor, 2015). Many factors such as poor wages for women, pregnancy associations, and the increase of single-woman parented families have impacted the increase of women in poverty. When analyzing children growing up in poverty a lot of factors come into play such as their physical, psychological and emotional development. To grow up in poverty can have long term effect on a child. What should be emphasized in analyzing the effects of poverty on children is how it has caused many children around the world to suffer from physical disorders, malnutrition, and even diminishes their capacities to function in society. Poverty has played a major role in the functioning of families and the level of social and emotional competency that children are able to reach. Many studies illustrate that high quality child care helps children who have been brought up in poverty to develop skills that enable better education, jobs and earnings (Adelman). It would help to reduce poverty if more parents would invest money `into high quality child care, because children would be able to learn the skills that they should know to get a good education. In an article entitled “9 Ways to Reduce Poverty,” Larry Adelman stated that “Investments in infrastructure—fixing old bridges, building mass transit, converting to clean energy sources—and investments in vital services such as schools, childcare and eldercare generate both public benefits and jobs.” Investments in the most important buildings and structures in a community would help to create job opportunities, which could benefit people who are in poverty by allowing them the opportunity to get a job.
