The Audience and Writing
Audience. Just one word yet it stirs frighteningly confusing images of perplexing thoughts in my mind. The word alone is strange, but when put in context of an essay it leaves me baffled and frustrated[d1] . The questions; “What is Audience?” “Why do I need it?” and, “What purpose does it serve?” are important to my finally some day understanding the concept of Audience, but at this point I can’t answer them fully[d2] . I can grasp the understanding of all the other aspects of writing an essay, although I may not incorporate them well in my paper at least I see why they are important. Audience, to me, is not so easy to understand.
After reading The Allyn and Bacon Guide to Writing and the assigned chapters given to us for each writing essay in W131 class[d3] , I am still left with an unclear picture of what to do with Audience in my papers. When thinking about Audience I think of who I’m writing to, just who is my paper directed at[d4] . Is it one person? Am I writing towards a group, or society? Is my essay directed at a large Audience, perhaps an entire culture? Is it good to have a small or large Audience[d5] ? When writing towards a large audience the paper has to cover a larger base of information, since more people means more diversity, and a greater difference in opinions, you must write about enough variety that the entire Audience can understand, follow, and see your paper clearly. Large Audiences can leave the reader confused, or perhaps make them not want to finish the essay at all. For myself I think it’s best if I narrow my Audience down to a small group, or even one person when writing my essays[d6] . Although I haven’t done so in the past it’s probably the best...

A larger Audience would be good if I wanted to write a broad paper that gives only general ideas or facts and doesn’t get to intimate in one area. This leads into the idea of mixing, it’s not wise to mix an Audience, what I mean by this is starting off with a large Audience and then getting very detailed into one aspect of that topic, this would cause the writer to lose a large number of their readers[d19] . When the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2011 rocked New York City, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C., the word “tragedy” was used on a grandiose level around the world. For the people who lived close enough to experience the events first-hand, they may not have even called it a tragedy; perhaps they called it a misfortune, retaliation, lack of a strong government, unreal, or maybe even rebirth. In the coming years after the attacks, everything between standing united as a nation to declaring a war had flourished; but how has that left us - the land that has no distinct ethnicity - feel about each other? Why is it that fear is usually missing in the affective mnemonics of memorial sites, which, after all, are signifiers of some of the most horrific violence in human history? Do memorials dedicated to these attacks bring us together in terms of understanding, or is it just continual collective grief? This paper will cover the global complexity of the 9/11 attacks, the Empty Sky 9/11 Memorial in Liberty State Park, NJ, and factors and theories that memorials do influence a sense of complexity. The ground of public memory is always in motion, shifting with the tectonics of national identity. I chose the Empty Sky 9/11 Memorial as my topic of observation as I, personally, visit a few times throughout the year to pay respects to people I personally knew who perished in the attacks to the World Trade Center. In 1918 when World War I ended, American society and culture changed immediately after. World War I resulted in the death of nine million soldiers and twenty one million wounded. Families were left mourning the loss of their relatives and people titled World War I as a “war to end all war.” With the nation going through such tragedy, change was bound to happen. During the 1920s there was a change in consumer culture, art, music and literature. So much changed happened during the 1920s that it’s referred to as the roaring twenties. Entertainment was on a rise and the way that Americans were used to living started to change. Along with that came immigration laws that changed American culture as well.
The Roaring Twenties was a time of confidence for all Americans, and this confidence affected them both culturally and socially. Culture in America at the time could have been described by words, such as baseball, the radio, patriotism, and even music. At the time, the radio swept the nation, bring people the sweet sounds of music everywhere at any time. Radio shows sprang up and introduced people to new ideas, and new ways of thinking. Some radio stations brought radical ideas and malicious attacks on many people, manily politicians. In fact, Robert P. Shuler was a pastor in Los Angeles whom was kicked off the radio for slandering the government and public officials. The radio also broadcasted America’s favorite pass time, baseball. Baseball was apart of every household in the 1920s, and it brought joy to millions of people across the nation. “He honestly believed that he loved baseball… the game was a custom of his clan, and it gave an outlet for the homicidal and side-taking instincts which babbit called ‘patriotism’ and ‘love of the sport’ (H). The sport baseball gave hope to many Americans. The Roaring Twenties was America’s golden age. F. Scott Fitzgerald once said,“The parties were bigger, the pace was faster, the shows were broader, the buildings were higher, the morals were looser, and the liquor was cheaper” (“People” PBS). The audience of a paper effects the entire tone and feel of it. When I first wrote the rhetorical analysis essay I considered my audience as the professor. I assumed this because she would be the one reading the essay. My assumption caused me to omit details and kept my writing too formal. By revising my audience, it allows for a larger scope of focus for the essay. Once I figured out that my audience was my peers the essay flowed much better. It was a known as a colorful time, the jazz age and the dollar decade. As World War I (WWI) came to a close many Americans wanted to simply forget about the Europeans and the war and live life to the fullest. Some chose to amuse themselves with soaring stock profits, illegal liquor, short skirts, and what many would look upon as shocking morals. This was a time of dramatic social and economic change. Many people were uncomfortable with this sometimes-racy “mass culture.” The Roaring Twenties was a time filled with youth hosting wild parties. Everything had a feeling of carelessness to it. People from all around the world were doing the same type of things as Americans were. As for the economic change, the total wealth of the U.S. nearly doubled from the year 1920 up until the great crash in 1929. Most African Americans knew this period to be the Harlem Renaissance. Many famous Jazz artists, playwrights, and sculptures came from the Harlem Renaissance. Some of which were Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes and Augustus Savage. Many other discoveries included sports legends, writers and gang life. Some of which were Babe Ruth, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Rudolph Valentino.
It would seem that the audience that they are trying to capture in this book, I think, are the type of people that pay close attention to media that occur with these type of events.

People decided that the traditional concepts of national security were not enough, and did not necessarily reflect current values or the needs of the people.
