I started the semester not knowing how I would adjust going from a high school writing class to a college level writing class. I felt my writing was above average, but writing was never one of my strong suits. I had no way of knowing if my writing competency could hold up to college academic standards. I took expository writing with Professor James Brady. Over the course of the semester, multiple learning objectives were learned through my essays. These learning objectives were subject matter knowledge, writing process knowledge, rhetorical knowledge, genre knowledge, and meta-cognition. The first essay written in the class was based on the premise of an instance where we fell in love with reading or writing. This essay included analysis from professionals in the English field. This addition, within the paper, taught me about discourse community. Discourse community involves the ideas and texts of others. The requirement of professional’s opinion into the essay allowed me to gain the insight into the ideas that others had about Hemingway’s work. Without the opinions of others in the writing community, it would be challenging to analyze any piece of work. Their opinions help shape my interpretation of the short story and allowed me to dive deeper into the underlining narrative of Hemingway’s story. The third paper was also a time for me to gain more knowledge about the subject matter. The overall knowledge of writing any piece of work.
