Have you ever been humiliated, teased, bullied or made fun of because of your weight or just by the way you look by your friends? In the story “Hunters in the Snow” the author uses one of the characters named Tub to demonstrate those qualities. The author wanted you to be able to put yourself in Tub’s shoes. Being bullied and teased is something almost everybody has gone through. Tub was embarrassed, bullied, and had unhealthy relationships with his friends. Tub was embarrassed by his friends all throughout the story “Hunters in the Snow”. It was like they never gave him a break. In the beginning of the story Tub was waiting for Kenney, and Frank for over an hour and when they showed up they tried to scare him. For ex. “His rifle slipped off his shoulder and clattered hand, then jumped back. He ran for the steps of the building. Another sandwich and a package of cookies tumbled onto the new snow. Selah Saterstrom’s The Pink Institution is a novel set in the Deep South following the Civil War. It tells the story of a family over many generations from the point of view of the narrator (who is assumed to be the author of the novel). Saterstrom’s novel is considered to be a historic autobiographical gothic novel. Over the years, this novel has been the topic of many enthusiastic debates over whether the work is actually a novel or even gothic in nature. After reading and analyzing the work at length, there is no doubt that this work illustrates many themes found commonly in gothic literature.
Wolff builds up the story on the platform of cold weather and the impact of the cold on each character slowly builds up. Kenny and Frank walk on one side of the creek and Tub walks on the other bank. All the way on their hunting path they had problems with the snow, especially Tub, who tends to swim in the deep snow, sometimes breaking through the hard crust that supports the lighter weight of the two other men. The frozen crust collapses under his weight, therefore he soon stops looking for traces and only tries to keep up with his friends (51). Their hunt was unsuccessful, they find no sign of deer and start returning to the trail that Tub has broken.

Starting in the 1870’s - 1880’s the United States experienced a depression that cut the prices of agricultural related good and led to the eviction of many farmers. Since farmers were at the bottom of the totem pole socioeconomically they were faced with high railroad fees and unsurmountable debt due to the fact that they had to take out loans to be pay for their crop harvesting and planting. This was partially due to the sharecropping system which would ignite a system of perpetual debt for poor farmers. Ultimately, the farmers would rise up and unite to what would be known as a populist movement; in retribution to what they claimed was the source of their problems. These events and time period heavily influenced Lyman Frank Baum in regards to the production and underlying political message in the Wizard of Oz. Author Henry Littlefield of “The Wizard of Oz: Parable of Populism” makes a compelling argument that indeed The Wizard of Oz was a political work, this can be linked to the many different life experiences of Baum that are mentioned throughout the article. Littlefield introduces the reader to whom Baum was during the first two pages, it becomes apparent that Baum views start to change as the Populist movement grows in strength and becomes accustomed to South Dakota frontier, once he moved there. The desolate and chaotic conditions of the society can have a significant amount of influence on the development on a certain character of a novel. For instance, at the time the novel, Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky was written, the conditions of the setting, was very chaotic and was in turmoil. Crime and Punishment took place in Russia, where Russia during the time Crime and Punishment was written was suffering due to economical downfalls and failure of the poor reforms of Tsar Alexander II; ultimately transforming Russia into a poverty-stricken country. The failure of Alexander’s reforms affected much of setting in which Crime and Punishment was written in, which ultimately contributed in character development of Raskolinokov. This is evident through the use of metaphor, which Dostoevsky uses to compare the state of the country to Raskolinkov’s apartment.
William Golding , the author of The Lord of the flies believes that evil resides in all human beings. The Lord of the Flies begins softly but nearing the end everything turns upside down. In the short story “Brownies,” author ZZ Packer uses the narrator, Laurel, to explore the tensions that exist between belonging to a community and maintaining individuality. While away at camp with her brownie troop, she finds herself torn between achieving group inclusion and sustaining her own individualism. Although the events of the short story occur at Camp Crescendo, Packer is able to expand (and parallel) this struggle for identity beyond the camp’s walls and into the racially segregated society that both the girls and their families come from. Packer is exploring how an individual’s inherent need for group inclusion consequently fuels segregation and prejudice against those outside the group across various social and societal stratums.
