Consider your favorite animal in the neighborhood you live in; now imagine that species going extinct because a foreign predator is pushing it away from any resources and enjoying it as an evening snack. This type of foreign predator is known as an invasive species. These types of attacks on an ecosystem or species, that can lead to extinction or destruction, are harmful to the environment, economy, or human health. These unfortunate turn of events for an ecosystem and what lies within it are occurring today and much too often. More and more species are endangered each year and more and more ecosystems are being damaged daily. A balanced ecosystem has a proportional amount of resources, predators, and prey. Everything runs smoothly and favorably. When an invasive species enters a balanced ecosystem, it creates a problem and throws the ecosystem out of whack. An invasive species breaks the proportional parts of the ecosystem, leading to destruction to each piece of the puzzle. Most of the time a foreign species introduced into a new thriving environment don’t survive their new surroundings, though some are able to flourish due to their ability to adapt, reproduce rapidly, or the presence of fewer natural predators. An example of a thriving invasive species would be the Kudzu vine. Kudzu is a major invasive species that is spreading at a rapid pace. The plant is an aggressive vine that blocks out any native plants from sunlight or nutrients. This not only endangers the affected plant but possibly animals that rely on that plant as a food source or of other natural use. Invasive species are ruining our ecosystems that are natural economy sources, food sources, habitat sources, and so much more.
