What is worship? What does the word worship mean? Why do we worship? All of these questions are what help define the significance of worship in my life and how I live it out every day. I think of the bible verse, John 4:23 “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.” To me, worshiping in truth is nearly exact to what the verse says, it’s living with honest worship in your spirit “in spirit and truth.”
Worship is not just something you do. For me, it’s a lifestyle, it’s how you act everyday, your thought pattern, your actions, and your very way of life. Not just something you do on Sunday mornings when there’s music. However, there are many ways to worship our Lord, including sunday mornings with music. People live out worship in their own special, unique ways. Back in the day, a simple bowing down was good enough for some folk. Worship is about honouring the Father. Taking your sight off of yourself and setting them on God. Re-aligning your heart with God as Lord of your life. Giving Him love by praise for all He is and all He has done in. Worship is an invitation to God to do all He wants with us, as response to the Holy Trinity. It is our way of showing God we desire only Him and all He is. Worship positions us to receive and respond to the Holy Spirit moving and inviting.
The Western church is described as being smaller in land mass, and less diverse (Shields, & Butzu, 2007, p. 103). The Eastern church is described as being quite vast, and full of different types of people (each with their own languages and customs that had an effect on the development of their worship styles and methods). Further we discover that the West had celebrated a time of peace (Christianity was legal, so there was a significant decrease in martyrdom), conversely the Eastern church was geographically located closely to an Islamic population, which meant it had a large military in comparison to the West. I should also point out that there was a shift in this time-period of the church providing what can be described as a governmental role, so in a very practical way being a bishop in the East could mean sending troops to defend members of your church (Shields, & Butzu, 2007, p. 103).
The church is the hub in which we as Christians come together as brothers and sisters in Christ to learn and study God’s Word. The church, according to passage, states that there should be no high statuses within the church and that we should all be on the same level playing field. Scripture tells us that we should be obedient; I read this to include the church and all of us who make up the congregation. We are told that Jesus lived a selfless life as he served His Father and I believe as servants to him, we should live the same kind of life as he did. I believe that at times it is difficult to be humbled in our lives and be forgiving of others, but scripture tells us that as a church, we should lead by example. We are promised by his word, that God created all things in the heavens and earth and that we shall bow and worship Him, shout praises to him, so that we can live a glorious life with him in His kingdom
Not as a firm guide, but as thought-provoking advice on how corporate worship can impact an ever-changing culture. I think any worship leader would be impacted by Dawn's questions: • Is God the subject of your corporate worship? • Does your worship build the Christian character of the individual and invite them into the community of Christianity? • Are you dumbing down your content to reach out? • How will you reach out in the midst of a market-driven, television age?
Growing up in Jamaica, I enjoyed worship. I remembered looking forward to church. We clapped our hands and stomped our feet and made a joyful noise unto the Lord. We didn't have keyboards and drums. We clapped and sounded like timbrels. I remembered when I learned to testify and it helped me and several others to build our confidence. I would sing in the local churches when they have special events. I watched young people being filled with the Holy Ghost and I wanted it so badly that I would pray and ask God to give it to me. I remembered watching my mother and my sister speak in tongues and I so wanted to do it.
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is true worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:1-2).
In the life of a believer, worshipping the Lord should be a daily discipline. Jesus talks about worship often to His disciples. In John 4:23 Jesus says, “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipper will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.” Jesus emphasizes the importance of worship to disciplines in explaining that God the Father seeks worshippers who truly worship Him. Worship is a gateway for the presence of God. Psalm 22:3 tells us that God “inhabits the praises of Israel.” When we praise, God is there in the midst of it and is inhabiting our praises. Worship brings power to our situations. Isaiah 63:1 says we should put on “the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.” We can come before God and bring all our heaviness and burdens and receive more than we expected. We can receive joy, peace, comfort, relief, power, strength, and assurance. There are many aspects of worship to be explored.
I truly believe this is the place in my life I am being called, equipped, and gifted. I also believe it is where I most naturally fit when it comes to the requirements of the job description. My heart feels drawn towards creating unity in a team of creatives who are passionate about worshipping, creating, and leading people to the foot of the cross in worship. Worship music gives people the opportunity to express their heart to God in words that they may not have even known they needed to sing, but also unites the voice of the entire congregation and orients us together towards God. I don’t think there is a formula of how to lead people into worship, but I am so deeply intrigued by the different ways to lead congregations, and I believe worship is a place that is constantly changing and growing in new expressions and voice to give to the church. One part of this job description that I really appreciated was the correlation it expressed in planning worship sets in correlation with the senior pastor. I have not been in a worship position where I actually got to sit and pray through the worship sets with the senior pastor. In my experience the senior pastor has either told us what he wants and we do it, or he just gives us all the responsibility and does not really care how we lead the time. However, I truly believe communication with the senior pastor about worship can be one of the most edifying planning aspects for a meaningful worship service that leads people into worship, the spoken sermon, and response

Lifting up our hand in worship is towdah, an act of surrender and thanksgiving. Surrendering by rising your flag in total submission and thanksgiving in adoration to Him accepting our submission. Kneeling before the Lord is barak, another form of adoration, and the Hebrew word for bless. We bless the Lord by bow before Him, like we would do to a king or queen who enter a building.

The purpose of this worship began as personal expression of passion for God, and has continued in this purpose. But the music has also transitioned to aide man in a desperate pursuit of God. These times will continue from the beginning, through the Medieval period, all the way to modern day music. Before delving into the objective within the time periods, it primarily needed to examine the reason behind the purpose of this music.
Michael Farley’s article, What is “Biblical” Worship?, describes what biblical worship is by providing evidence of the biblical theology of worship that is currently being used in the evangelical world. The New Testament indicates that it is only through the Son that we have access to the Father, and by the power of the Holy Spirit that we respond to and seek the Father. Our worship reflects the revelation of the Triune God as we behold the role of the persons of the Godhead in Scripture. Our worship is transformed as we reflect their relationship in our own submission to authority and one another. The unity of the Godhead is reflected in our unity with one another. The trinity is also reflected in the directing of our elements of worship (such as prayer and singing) to the Father, through the Son, and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Biblical worship models, guards, and honors this proper orientation of worship as it is presented to us in Biblical revelation.
