The National World War II Memorial sits between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Memorial on the National Mall. It was created to honor the 16 million people who served in the armed forces during World War II. Out of these service members, 400,000 gave their lives during the war effort. Placed at the east side of the Reflecting Pool, the World War II Memorial is open to the public 24 hours a day. From 9:30 AM to 10 PM, individuals can ask questions from park rangers that are available on-site. History of the Memorial In 1987, Roger Durbin approached an Ohio Congressional Representative with an idea for a World War II memorial. As a result, Democratic Representative Marcy Kaptur submitted HR 3742 on December 10 to the House of Representatives. The resolution proposed a World War II memorial to be set up by the American Battle Monuments Commission. For Americans from that generation, his words were an unforgettable speech. Today, a portion of President Roosevelt's speech is engraved on the Pacific side of the World War II Memorial. It uses his infamous quote about “a date which will live in infamy.” Above the inscription, an image of an average American family is installed. Each member of the family is listening closely to the radio as President Roosevelt's speech played. In its simplicity, it reminds America of the men living and dead who sacrificed at Pearl Harbor.
