The next type of aircrafts to be used in World War II were bomber aircrafts. These aircrafts were specialized in dropping bombs on enemies, airstrips, ships, battlegrounds, or anything that stood in their way. Usually, bomber aircrafts were used during the night so they were harder to detect than in the day. Fighter aircrafts usually accompanied these bombers in the event that they were detected by the enemy and needed a way to defend themselves. Bombers provided a huge amount of support to the war and ended up ending World War II. There were three types of bombers that were used, including light, medium, and heavy bombers. These heavy bombers carried a high amount of bombload or several large bombs. These aircrafts could carry up to twenty-thousand pounds of bombload and were usually equipped with four remote controlled turrets for defending itself during battle. Heavy bomber and torpedo aircrafts were the most destructive aircrafts in the world at that time. These aircrafts were used for heavy bombardments over cities and naval fleets. Heavy bombers were a major key in winning World War II for the Allies. On August 6, 1945, a U.S. Boeing B-29 Superfortress flew over Japan and dropped an atomic bomb named the Little Boy which devastated the city of Hiroshima. A couple of days later, another heavy bomber dropped a second atomic bomb on the city of nagasaki, ending the war because of Japan’s surrender. The most notorious heavy bomber let alone bomber of World War II was the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, the same plane as the Enola Gay. The Enola Gay was the heavy bomber that dropped the first atomic bomb on Japan which ended the war. This aircraft was named after the pilot’s mother.
