In today’s work life, since people spend most of their time at workplace, it is vital to keep physical and psychological health at work which form one of the two sides of qualified work-home balance. Researches which focus on the workplace environment indicate that the well-being of the employees at workplace largely influenced by the work stress that can be defined as the loss of control of the individual over his performance for work (Anderson & Pulich, 2001). That means, knowledge, skill and ability of the person becomes not enough for the demands of the work. Giving health care to the patients who are in their terminal term, insufficient equipment, work overload, conflicts with co-workers, insufficient performance appraisal mechanism, and uncertainty, angry and over demanding patients are one those stress factors that negatively influence health care givers (Chang et al, 2006) and similarly these stressors are seen in nursing homes which is one of the branches of health care sector. For example, in the nursing home where the present study was done, every resident has at least one disease which requires permanent health care. In health care workplace environment, medical or non-medical care giving staff takes a special position that puts them in a stress risky situations. Because that profession requires the ability to work as a teammate, responsibility of giving care during 24 hours and ability to stay emotionally strong (Philips & Brooks, 1996). However, stating only a few factors that determine the degree of these staff’s distress doesn’t give enough explanation about the issue. The nursing profession has often been dubbed as the backbone of the healthcare system because nurses are first in line when it comes to the patient’s medical care. Nurses, in effect, may feel overworked, underappreciated, frustrated and emotionally exhausted. These stressors that healthcare providers undergo are described by different terms including compassion fatigue, caregiver burnout and other related issues. In this paper, the nature of compassion fatigue and caregiver burnout are first defined and discussed. The symptoms as well as the coping strategies for these phenomena are then explained.
Nurses Joe and Sarah have been working in a medical surgical unit that has been experiencing a nursing shortage, which has led to an increase in the workload. Sarah has been feeling the physical effects of the stress and feels there is a lack of management support, while Joe experiences some feelings of being overwhelmed, but tries to use it as learning experiences. Joe has developed positive methods of coping, while Sarah is quickly heading towards burnout. The potential ramifications for the employer can be costly when employees succumb to internal and external stressors. To effectively combat job stress and develop a comprehensive stress management program, organizations must be cognizant of several areas that may be contributing factors to an employee’s stress level. Internally, organizations should review the employee’s workload and ensure that they have the necessary skills to complete the tasks they are expected to complete (Ornelas & Kleiner, 2003). They must also work to “motivate, challenge and take full advantage of the employee’s skills and abilities” (Ornelas & Kleiner, 2003). Employee’s job stress can also be decreased by allowing them take an active part in decisions, creating an atmosphere that facilitates a support network, and offering flexibility in their schedules that allows them to address responsibilities outside the workplace (Ornelas & Kleiner, 2003).
