Diverse workplace is critical because it embodies a compilation of all human ideas, cultures and backgrounds put into an inventive and forward thinking group of individuals. Managing individuals are looking for an A-team group type atmosphere that will be highly functioning with inventive ideas and able to apply all sorts of ideals garnered from there co-workers because of the diversity. The concept of workplace diversity simply put is what essentially makes us human yet different. Griffin and Morehead state that it is in a sense a compilation of various factors such as sex, age, race, religion, beliefs and cultural background along with significant others. You might say that yes everyone is different and they contribute something but it is this individuality that makes them so unique in the workplace while also being so effective in incorporating ideas.
The diversity of an organization’s workforce and taking affirmative steps to attract, develop and retain diverse employees has become an essential component to business success. It is to encourage managers to use all resources when recruiting to enhance the cultural diversity in their work place as “dynamic atmosphere of collaboration”. Ethic represents the principles by which people distinguish what is morally right. “Diversity is characteristics of individuals that shape their identities and the experience they have in society” (Certo, 2010, p.117) Workplace diversity is similarities and differences among employees in terms of age, cultural background, physical abilities and disabilities, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, education personality. It is how people perceive others and how they perceive themselves.
Diversity is accepting and respecting unique individuals. Each individuals have distinct characteristics that define them as a person. Recognizing differences in the workplace will create a more diverse environment. The more companies becomes more and more diverse the better they will understand different individuals, the qualities they bring and will learn from them and will be able to manage them. Employees of different backgrounds, ethnicity, religion and race creates diversity at work.
Each team must be internally effective in order to meet organizational goals. Therefore, managers must effectively manage workforce relationships with other individuals within the organization. What is diversity? Diversity management is usually been defined as recognizing, understanding, accepting, and valuing differences among people with respect to age, class, ethnicity, gender, physical and mental ability, race, sexual orientation, spiritual practice, and public assistance status. Generally, diversity management are made up of taking enthusiastic actions related to the organization’s capabilities of minimizing obstacles of diversity and maximizing its opportunities.
Another part of the definition is known as the layers of diversity that are personality & organizational dimension. Personality is the innate elements that make you unique as an individual and organizational dimension is the work content/ field, division department / unit / group; seniority; work location; union affiliation; management status; functional level / classification. One example defines diversity as a matter of individual responsibility and morality. Another definition describes diversity as creating high performing organizations through valuing and using all the talents of employees of different groups. Managers continuously strive for organizational improvements both financially and throughout the workplace. I believe it is important for Managers to value the diversity in the workplace by recognizing their workplace composition, and the cross-culture differences and similarities. Valuing diversity in the workforce can assist a manager or an organization in developing and utilizing all of the human resources available. Valuing diversity can be defined as, “valuing the vast differences between people within an organization.” Our text defines valuing diversity as: “means putting an end to the assumption that everyone who is not a member of the dominant group must assimilate.” In today’s work environment the workforce may consist of numerous employee’s with various ethnic backgrounds and ages. These diversities give an organization the opportunity to obtain new ideas or alternative solutions to a complex problem.

Career planning is essential in developing the diversity program and allows employees a roadmap to company’s senior level positions. By developing the plan, one knows that the company is committed to diversity. Working environment will be supportive and non hostile toward diverse employees. The plan will informed all employees that events posted on the company’s board will be all inclusive. Company sponsored events will have a committee that is well represented by all cultural backgrounds within the organization.
