Pam is a lesbian firefighter working in Pittsburgh; she is very good at her job yet has failed to get promoted. She has also been the victim of harassment from the male firefighters at her station who often joke and prank her, such as jumping in on her while she’s in the shower. She’s afraid that her gender and sexuality may be holding her back from achieving success in her career. Sadly many women and homosexuals face these kinds of situations in their workplace and in the article “Sexuality in Organizations” authors Patricia Yancey Martin and David L. Collision discuss how are gender and sexuality may impact our work environment, why many women and homosexuals face discrimination in the workplace, and how we can create a positive environment for all employees. In this paper I will summarize their findings as well as add my thoughts and opinions.
The authors begins the article by stating that sexuality has not business in the workplace, yet many employees ignore this notion (Martin1) The authors go on to say that your gender and sexual preference play a large part in your workplace and that there is much pressure for men and women to display themselves as heterosexuals in order to prevent questions and gossip from fellow employees (Martin1). Many men and women tend to display pictures of their family in their work environment, which the author believes is that persons way of displaying their heterosexuality, whereas many homosexual employees do not display photos of loved ones in fear of revealing themselves as homosexuals or making other employees uncomfortable ( Martin 2). They then state that if an employee is suspected of being a homosexual they may face discrimination by both employer and employees (Martin 1). The author’s...

In conclusion, I found that I agreed allot with a lot of what Martin and Collinson .
I was shocked to see that there is still this kind of discrimination in organizations. I think it’s appalling that in today’s age, people who work there asses off still have to face such discrimination simply because of their sexuality and gender. There is no reason why a woman or homosexual should be treated any differently from that of a man. If I found out that my mom, who is a single mother, was getting less pay because she was a woman I would be enraged. I really hope that these companies begin to take this topic seriously and take a strong look at how they treat their employees, and begin cracking down on harassment in the workplace, and if not they should face severe consequences. America is known as the land of opportunity and freedom, and maybe it’s time we show it.
The central facts in this case are; Cracker Barrel felt justified in firing and not hiring homosexual in their restaurants, the company informed them that this is the reason they were not receiving employment, and the company has had accusations of discriminating against blacks. This case study address the major issues cover in chapter eighteen and that is Employment discrimination and Affirmative Action. Some sub issues are the fact the homosexuals can not press charges or receive monetary compensation for their loss.

Homonegativity is defined as any prejudicial affective or behavioral response directed towards and individual because he or she is perceived to be homosexual (Cerny & Polyson, 1984). This “prejudicial affective” or “behavioral response” can be translated into the way individuals with homonegative attitudes treat other people they assume are homosexual. This implied negative treatment can be observed in everyday life settings; for example, an employment recruiter choosing one applicant over the other because the undesired candidate was thought to be homosexual, holistically unconcerned with whether or not their homosexuality was proven. Homonegative attitudes affecting perceived homosexual people is also observed in hate crime incidents, as
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, defines sexual harassment as a behavior of a sexual nature that affects an individual’s terms of employment or creates a hostile and intimidating work environment. According to the EEOC, it is “unlawful to harass a person, an applicant, or employee because of that person’s sex.” (Sexual Harassment) The term “sexual harassment” can be a bit misleading as other forms of work related harassment can take place that have nothing to do with ‘sex’ but do however, fall under the same umbrella. We will look to identify the different types of sexual harassment in the workplace, specifically, ‘Quid Pro Quo’ and what it’s like to work in a ‘Hostile Work Environment’. This paper will focus on the law, woman’s rights in the workplace, and discuss an example from the Supreme Court Case of: Meritor Savings Bank, FSB v. Vinson, 477 U.S. 57 (1986).
...e need for women’s dependence on men. Unfortunately, compulsory heterosexuality is reinforced daily through multiple social institutions including, religion, literature, and politics. Compulsory heterosexuality has contributed to the confinement of women in lower paying jobs than men due to the sexual marketability required of women to be heterosexual feminine woman. The pressure to be heterosexual in the workforce then and in present day America stretches out to society turning women into sexual pray feeding the dominance of men especially in the workforce. This reality has caused a disturbance within the feminist movement for it continues to disempower not allowing for the growth of sexualities like lesbianism. By disregarding other sexual orientations, society is inhibiting the prosperity of people especially women who are still fighting the battles for equality.
Men and women comprise two very different and distinct cultures. In an organizational setting, misunderstandings between these two cultures can cause major problems and disrupt the process of working to achieve organizational goals. This problem is compounded when men and women of different cultural backgrounds come together in an organizational setting. One such problem that may occur is the issue of sexual harassment in the organization. The following study will explore the possible definitions of sexual harassment from a cultural perspective. Do different cultures perceive and define sexual harassment differently?
Mike is an assistant manager at a grocery store, whose ambition is to be a manager one day. However, the fear of being discriminated against he pretends to like girls. In one the scenes, mike’s coworker asks, “Mike I never heard you talk about girls. Do you like girls?” Mike lied to his coworker and answered, “Yes I like girls”. In America, sexual orientation discrimination in the workplace has been a major issue for many years (nih.gov 2015). It occurs when an employee is being subjected to unfair treatment because of their sexual orientation. Moreover, being openly gay at work can affect job promotion, health benefits and work atmosphere. In fear of discrimination, Mike is forced to hide his sexual orientation and pretend to like
Each year many people first become aware of sexual harassment when they are harassed in the workplace. Today in the United States there still seems to be a need for general information about sexual harassment. Many people are unaware of exactly what sexual harassment is, how it affects its victims, where it happens, and what to do if it happens to them. There are many laws that protect people from sexual harassment and provide them with information about what to do if you should ever be in this situation (Wyatt, 2000).
In our society most men are likely to obtain higher paying jobs and are able to continue working even after becoming parents, whereas, majority of women obtain lower paying jobs and having to choose between being a parent and having a career. After reading the plays of Top Girls by Caryl Churchill and Hosanna by Michael Tremblay, I discovered that gender played a major role in how men and women are treated in society. The characters in these two plays challenges the gender norms, and therefore, I will argue that women are not treated equally in the workplace; that people who are of the queer community are considered to be inferior and less worthy of being accepted within the public sphere.
All over the world, we hear about people treating each other prejudicially depending on their background, ethnicity, or sex orientation. Workplaces should be free from all personal biases but unfortunately, we hear about employees being discriminated against, almost, on a daily basis. Workplace discrimination can be described as treating an individual or a group of people differently than others. It also can take more serious and threatening forms such as sexual harassment. It can be expressed in the form of offensive jokes, unwelcomed body contacts, inappropriate gestures, or even direct sexual contact.
Even though there is an epidemic spreading publicly about the problems and suffering of sexual harassment, surveys demonstrate that many businesses operating in the United States are not doing anything to address the problems with it. Some more recent news reports show that sexual harassment has reached even the highest levels of the companies like managers and supervisors. Even though businesses know sexual harassment exists, they appear unsure of what to do about it. Due to the companies not doing anything drastic about these situations, the liability of the employer for sexual harassment continu...
According to the research done in the year 2013 found that most of the LGBT community members were highly mistreated badly by their bosses who discriminated them in respect to their sexuality transgender and sex personality (Gates, 2011). This act did not please LGBT community and made them to go streets campaigning to be given their job rights and be respected by their employers.. Another report which was done in the same year by the National Black Justice Coalition found that majority of the LGBT community group around 50% who are black Africans were highly discriminated and segregated at workplace. Seat found that LGBT laborers will probably acquire less every year contrasted with the general U.S. populace. Furthermore, from the analysis done about discrimination of LGBT community in employment showed that that Transgender people
Sexual Harassment/Assault is a growing issue in the U.S. In this paper I will highlight the meaning of sexual harassment, some of the signs, behavior theories, and concepts of being sexually harassed. The history of sexual harassment dates back to slave days when it didn’t really have a meaning or name but women activist were protesting against it. I will explore the statistics of sexual harassment and how it occurs more common in women. Also I will connect my personal experiences as a teenager dealing with my sister being sexually harassed at her first job. Research shows that women are more affected by being sexually harassed or abused especially when it happens at their job. They find it more difficult to carry on after they have been harassed and to move on comfortably. This issue usually has a more long term effect on women then it would have on men. Men are usually the ones who initiate any sexual act that’s going to take place. Therefore it’s more common to find that the men are harassing the women not saying it’s never vice versa but women are shown more in my research. My personal experiences aren’t exactly direct but it gave me a firsthand view on how this issue is sometimes hard to recognize but very prominent in society today. Studies show that being sexually harassed can effect and devastate your psychological health, physical well-being and vocational development. Therefore it’s better to be aware of the history, and behavioral concepts of this issue to avoid it from happening to you.

A sexual harassment survey was conducted in 1995 with 551 women firelighters responded. The survey revealed that 88% of the women had experienced sexual harassment. 73% of the women stated they had been treated differently in negative ways, from their male co-workers. (Sexual Harassment) In 1999, a longer survey was given and the percentages increased when women were asked if they had experienced any sexual harassment.
