Working at The Bindery
I have a dream. I have a dream about getting a doctorate degree in music. Well, to get that far, I know I must get through undergraduate school first, let alone graduate school, and so on. Last year I realized that I needed a job that paid much more than minimum wage if I was going to afford to go to college. I then heard about The Bindery from a friend in the same situation as I was. I filled out an application, went to the orientation a few weeks later, and then discovered that working there would be no ordinary job. I will now briefly explain how the factory works and then show you the "ropes" of working in my department.
There are two major departments at The Bindery: the press and the bindery. The press cuts large rolls of paper into smaller ones. The rolls of paper are trimmed down to size for books, and all words and graphics are printed here. The paper is then folded by machinery into forms (groups of pages in books). Bundles of forms are held together with a piece of wood at each end and tied with plastic string. The bundles are then loaded onto skids. After the skids are prepared, the bundles are shipped to the work-in-progress area (where you are) by fork trucks. The skids of bundles are placed in front of each pocket, where forms are placed to feed into the machine that binds the paper into books. Pockets are parts of machinery about 12-15 feet long and are at waist or stomach height. The machine takes one form from each pocket and groups them all together to make a book. It runs very quickly, and it can make thousands of books in minutes. Five lines are in the bindery department, therefore, five books can be made at the same time.

Working at The Bindery has taught me and is still teaching me much responsibility. I have learned to manage my time well. Working afternoons is tough because I don't get home until midnight every night. Life isn't fun and games every night anymore. I also have learned to work very hard for my money to pay for my college tuition. Being there just for the summers was a taste of real life for me; not everyone gets the opportunity to live wealthy like we see in the movies. It has given me more motivation to stay in school to avoid a life-long job like this, for I don't want to labor for the rest of my life. I want to continue to live out my dream of getting my doctorate degree in music.
Like many other wars, the Vietnam War left a devastating impact on the soldiers and civilians alike. The Vietnam War created conflict as most of the American citizens were opposed to US military involvement. Many men were drafted and forced to join the military against their will, those who refused had to flee to other nations or face imprisonment. The attitude toward the war was overwhelmingly negative from the beginning and only worsened as horrifying video coverage was broadcasted in the living room of America. The war became all too real for the public; they could not imagine the atrocities that were being committed by all involved in the war.
The Vietnam War changed the course of American History forever. The war showed the American people they had a voice and with protest they could make a difference. Vietnam was an area that many believed we had no business being in. It was a civil war and American sons were being sent there to die for something that did not affect them. This angered people all over the United States. Some took matters into their own hands and used their first amendment right to protest.
The Vietnam War has had its effects on America, both good and bad. We can ridicule it, we can deny it, we can say it was for the best, we can say we shouldn't have even gotten involved, but the one thing we can't do is ignore it. Because it's become an unforgettable part of history, and we all need to remember Vietnam.
The band has taught me many valuable lessons. My technical skills have grown as well as my social skills. I’ve learned to treat others with respect; additionally, I now understand my unique learning style. I am a much faster learner due to being taught work in a short amount of time which has helped me tremendously with school. I used to not care about my grades in middle school, for I had nothing to work towards. I just went there turned in some work and called it a day. Now I have something to keep me on my toes, and my grades have become tip top, thus I am now able to be a part of this organization. My confidence has exceedingly grown since last year. I was very self conscious about who I was, for I had nothing to help me embrace who I truly am. I have been taught major things about self discipline this past season. Success is a road paved with mistake and failure. Through these mistakes, I learned self control and perseverance. Going back to freshman year I didn’t think I would be as skilled
"Looking for Work" by Gary Soto is a narration of a nine year old boy, Gary, who is a Mexican-American who wants to become wealthy. He gets this idea during summer and sets out around the neighborhood looking for small jobs. He did a few errands and earns about a quarter. He also watches television shows and is attracted to the life of perfect white families. He wants his family to be like them too. He thought that way; the white people will like them more. His family was very different, and his sister could not understand why he wanted to be more like white people. In the end, when everyone left, he continues to search for a job.
Lennie has the mental capability of a 6 year old. This limits most every part of his life. Lennie's weaknesses make it difficult for him to have social contact outside of George. He misreads social cues which get him into trouble. He also doesn't know how to be fragile, as much as he loves to pet mice, he usually pets them too hard and kills them. He doesn't only pet mice to hard either. He ended up petting curley's wife so hard he broke her neck and killed her too. Him having this weakness of not being smart causes a lot of issues throughout the story. “He heard Lennie’s whimpering cry and wheeled about. “Blubberin’ like a baby! Jesus Christ! A big guy like you.” Lennie’s lip quivered and tears started in his eyes,” (Steinbeck 9). Having the words like whimpering and blubbering show how weak Lennie really is. Those words seem like they are meant for a baby, and not a big tough guy like Lennie. His mental capability is a big defining part in who he is which then means it's a big part of his weakness.
Lennie Small is a gentle giant who possesses and almost superhuman strength that ultimately leads to tragedy. We first read about Lennie's great strength in the opening scene when he has killed, probably by accident, the pet mouse he has in his pocket. We learn that it is not the first time Lennie has killed pets. During the same scene, Steinbeck compares him to a bear and a horse, both strong animals. This imagery of Lennie as an animal continues. He is also compared to a terrier, indicating that he is a faithful and loyal companion to George.
After being on my own for a year, I decided I wanted to go back to school. At first, I chose to start getting a certification in insurance. It was a self-study program, and I had to grasp the information then take a standardized proctored exam. I began one course and gave myself a year to study it and take the exam after being unsuccessful; I went back to the drawing board. Six months later, I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I then began looking at my benefits package at work, and I started asking my coworkers what they were doing. In just asking around, I found Ashford University. Almost two years after being on my own and making the decision to return to school, I finally found Ashford University, I applied around Thanksgiving and began at the beginning of
Changing my life for an education that will follow me with an eye like an eagle. I decide to attend college for my second time to have the ideal of how to run a business with my Culinary Art Degree. The Journey whom which, my daughter can continued my ledge from her great grandmother, grandmother, and a mother. That will be the most happily feeling ever.
It took me approximately six years after high school graduation to finally figure but what I wanted to do with my life. Those years in limbo were trying and difficult, but I learned who I was and what I wanted; to say it was a waste of time, would be a gross understatement. I am not proud of the way some of the events in my life have unfolded, but as a result of my hardship I have become a more engaged learner. At the end of my six years of folly, I started my vigorous pursuit of the communication studies major. This education has been helpful to me, not only in making me an attractive candidate for the future job market, but also in shaping who I am and who I will become. I have become a better person through the concepts and principles
Back in High School I could not even see myself pursuing any goals that I had set. I got pregnant at sixteen, and decided to drop out of school so I could work full-time to support my family. Needless to say, my mom was not happy. She had worked so hard for my future. I realized the only way to ensure my family’s future was through higher education. Knowing that was the key factor to happiness I enrolled at SCALE (an adult program from Somerville High School). Currently I have a rewarding job working in a Day Care for Catholic Charities. I help kids learn about the world through play. For me, that has been about as close to “right livelihood” as I have ever enjoyed.
After seeing the impact music can have on one person, I was enraptured with the magic of music. It hit me like a brick, creating a sense of calm once I determined what I wanted and what I could give to people. I continued to make the most out of my internship, and dug into the activities, helping plan, lead and create these engaging ideas while maintaining a psychological approach. I have also frequently administered private bassoon lessons to younger students. The ability for people to soak up knowledge like a sponge never ceases to amaze me, and teaching others has, in turn, made me a better student. The advantages to teaching frequently inspire me to better myself. Music has played a large role in my life, and performing music grants me the freedom to express and interpret the nuances of the simple black notes on the page to create a masterpiece. I am discovering myself daily, and over time, I have evolved into who I am today. My goals surround music, helping others, and bettering myself and the world around me, and the ample opportunities enable the efforts towards these
Let’s talk about the importance of having a “real job.” I have spent a huge portion of my life working for someone else. I consider myself to have three full time jobs. All of my jobs are equally important to me. Yes I lead a normal life, but it is a very hectic one. I have a full-time job, attend school full-time, and I am a full-time parent to four kids.
Globalization has been long argued to be the cause of many problems within the world, while this is true it is also incorrect at the same time creating a paradox that takes careful analytical examination. In the world we live in today, we are in what some have called the third Globalization event of humanity. What is globalization and how does this affect the world as a whole? Through the analysis of text covered in class and outside readings, I will attempt to answer this and explain how globalization is affecting the world, and what it will mean in the long term for humanity and society as a whole.
As a freshman in high school, I decided to devote much of my time to the piano and becoming the best musician that I could be. At the end of that year, I competed at a state music competition with perfect scores from 3 judges, became the head pianist at my church, and made extra money for my family teaching children how to become pianists themselves. My sophomore year I became much more of an entrepreneur. By the end of my sophomore year, I was assistant manager of a business, continued teaching piano, and was able to buy myself a car which my family could not afford to provide. Continuing on through the years I pushed myself to gain experience, knowledge, and guidance
