Introduction About This Book Summer is a great time to be outdoors with your preschooler. Preschool years are the most important years in your child’s development. With a little planning and your flexibility you can have a great summer. These activities can be done with children whether you are home all day with them, some of the day, or evenings and weekends. The activities in this book can also be done with early elementary age children. This book is not limited to just moms, but for dads, grandparents, teachers, college students, and anyone else working with children. Philippians 4:19 KJV (King James Version) Art/Craft Ideas There are numerous ideas on the internet and on Pinterest of craft ideas you can do with children. In this chapter I will share some of my favorite things to do as well as ideas of what to do with materials on hand. When doing any type of craft or art activity, do some advanced planning and make sure you have all the materials needed. Also, if you are doing any type of messy activity have available wipes, dishpan with soapy water, and towels to aid in cleanup. Many of the art activities that I like to do with children are process centered not project oriented. The type and way a material is used is more important than what it is suppose to be. There are some activities that need to be done a certain way to get the desired outcome, but I still try and have the children be creative in how they make it. I like to have butcher paper, cardstock, construction paper, copier paper, and tissue paper. You don’t need to have these all at once but it is good to stock up on this when you can. Butcher paper Materials needed: butcher paper (you can get it at Sam’s club for a good price), clothespins, crayons, glue, markers, material, paint, spray bottles, tape Procedure: You can do a variety of things with butcher paper. You can outline your child (body tracing) and then they can color it in, use material or yarn to decorate it. Hang some butcher paper on a fence and have your child spray paint it (clear bottles with some paint added to it). Put something behind it and on the ground to protect the area from paint. You can cut a piece and roll it up for a telescope or sword. Your children can decorate it and the paper can be used for a tablecloth. Paper chains Materials needed: glue or glue stick, pieces of colored construction paper cut into strips Procedure: Put some glue at one end of the paper and roll it into a loop.
