Born Woodrow Wilson Paige, Woody Paige is sports columnist who primarily covers the Denver Broncos football team for the Denver Post, and appears regularly on the ESPN television show Around the Horn. Paige is known on Around the Horn as the guy who writes witty phrases on his miniature chalkboard that hangs behind him. Paige attended the University of Tennessee and is currently a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee, and is a Baseball Hall of Fame voter. Paige does a fine job of writing witty and informative articles for his Bronco-crazed fans.
Woody Paige is known as a sports writer who incorporates humor into his columns, and some people do not consider it to be necessary. Some people feel Paige should be more serious when writing about John Fox’s and other NFL coach’s heart problems. Paige talks about coach Dan Reeves with a jocular tone because Reeves stated “he probably shouldn’t have eaten McDonald’s every day.” (John Fox’s symptoms). Some people do not enjoy his plentiful, and occasionally humorous, similes like, “(broncos’ defense) they’re fluffy like cotton candy, velvety as chocolate pudding.” (Broncos’ defense rescue). Some people do not like his humor, but that is why most people enjoy his writing so much.
Woody Paige, more often than not, satisfies his readers minds with his wit and humorous references in his articles. In a time when reading is considered boring and too much work, Paige captivates his readers and makes reading his articles worth the supposed hassle. Paige often creates effective comparisons that help to get his point across. Charley Johnson is a very talented NFL quarterback from NMSU that not many people know about. Having accomplished so much, I feel that people should. Bleacher Report’s Brendan Majev, ranked him the 91st greatest quarterback of all time. He was drafted 10th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. After playing with them and the Oilers, he ended his career with the Denver Broncos in 1975. Topics gone over in this essay include his early life, his college football career, his NFL career, his army career, and his education.
Brooks language reveals that he is an ambitious man. His article shows that he may have even been one of those boys in class that couldn’t stand still.
Chuck Klosterman is renown because of his unique style in writing. This author takes risks in what he writes and he does not follow a template that is commonly used as he really tries to make his writing one-of-a-kind by being very open minded and making assertions that are non-conforming to what people want to hear. This style of writing embodies a type of man that is not afraid to take risks and gets his ideas across in a very unique and interesting way.
For this rhetorical analysis paper I chose one of my favorite, and most famous, sports speeches of all time, Lou Gehrig’s farewell to baseball address. Lou Gehrig was a famous baseball player in the 1920’s and 30’s. Lou didn’t really need to use a attention getting introduction, he was well known and loved by so many that people piled into Yankee Stadium to watch and listen to him give this speech. Although he didn’t need an attention getter, he began his speech with one of the greatest baseball quotes of all time, “Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” (Gehrig, 1939) Every single time I hear or read that opening line it sends chills down my spine and stops me for a moment to reflect on everything that is going on in my own life.

According to the article, “when Theodore Roosevelt saved football” written by Bruce Watson, Roosevelt’s intervention help changed the rules of football to make it safer. Football is considered a dangerous sport and has caused severe injuries to players and even death. Football was becoming corrupted, players started hurting others to stop them from playing for good. President Roosevelt realized football was turning into a problem, with the request of the headmaster, he decided to get more involved. The example Philips’s uses is about how Jonathan Marten left his football career to seek help for his emotional issues. The Shadow Leagues’ J.R. Gamble called Martin “soft” and another ex-player of the Dolphins lineman Lydon Martha said that Martin was “standoffish and shy”. That Martin “broke the code”. Philips’s tone is also that men tell it like it is, and if you don’t like it then you aren’t a man. In football, some team members haze other team members, it just them being them. It’s quite funny how no one thought of Joe Heisman was soft for leaving the game when he broke his leg. Everyone supported him and was there for him and never bullied him for that. Leroy “Satchel” Paige was born July 7th, 1906, the seventh child (out of twelve) and third son to be birthed to Lula and John Coleman Paige in Mobile, Alabama. Leroy’s life was immediately difficult, mainly because he was born in a family that was struggling with poverty. His father was a gardener, and unemployed, while his mother was a domestic servant. The first personal traits that Coach Dale was forced to exhibit were his toughness and his assertiveness. On his first night in Hickory he met the men of town in the barbershop who were all willing to provide their experience and insight on the team and how to coach. Coach Dale had enough self confidence to know that none of these “insights” were going to help the Hickory team win basketball games and let them know they weren’t welcome by turning his back and walking out. The author accomplished his purpose of telling the true story of Chris McCandless. He was an eccentric, unpredictable man that led a very interesting life. His life deserved a tribute as truthful and respectful as Jon Krakauer’s. Through his use of literary techniques, the author creates an intense, and emotional piece of literature that captures the hearts of most of its readers. Irony, characterization, and theme all play a vital role in the creation of such a renowned work of art. “Sensational…[Krakauer] is such a good reporter that we come as close as we probably ever can to another person’s heart and soul” (Men’s Journal).
Gwendolyn Brooks once said “I felt that I had to write. Even if I had never been published, I knew that I would go on writing, enjoying it, and experiencing the challenge”. For some, writing may not be enjoyable or easy, but for Brooks writing was her life. Gwendolyn Brooks not only won countless awards, but also influenced the lives of several African Americans.
