Film is a form of entertainment which is admired due to its capability of creating an escape from one world to enter another. Therefore, it is important to mesmerise and intrigue the target audience to captivate their interests, developing an understanding and loyalty. Award winning films of Hollywood exemplify and present a powerful meaning using techniques established by the director. These techniques can be shown through the production and distribution, film language and the influences and, narrative choices such as plot, structure, and character. This is reinforced throughout Wonder Woman and La La Land directed by Patty Jenkins and Damien Chazelle respectively. Essentially this refers to the breakdown of each element’s construction within the visual world (Pierson, ND). This is shown throughout Wonder Woman and La La Land by the costumes, landscapes, lighting, colours and editing. Chazelle uses lighting to emphasise isolation, importance of achieving goals and the act of finding each other. Within the scene of Sebastian and Mia’s official meeting, all the lights dimmed, focusing the two characters. Sebastian’s dreams are displayed within this scene as he plays a song with significant meaning, thus he is also isolated from the rest of reality. This use of lighting sets a mood and provokes emotion for the audience, making them feel his loss of job and the act of them potentially falling in love. Further to this, the opening scene can show this alternative contrast of reality and Hollywood idealism. The director positions the audience to view the busy lifestyle, whilst incorporating the musical element through the choreography, costuming and characters. This shows the emotion of the scene by bright colouring of the past and the musical elements of enthusiasm. The visual interpretation of the editing techniques within the film present a deeper meaning through the cuts and the impact that will be reflected upon the audience. The editor of La La Land, Tom Cross, aims to combine two different tones, simply things that do no co-exist, into a sequence of shots to create a musical world. He used short and unbroken takes for romantic scenes to create empathy and generate an emotional attachment toward the characters (Cross, 2017). Further to this the editing styles within Wonder Woman indicate the selective choice in scenes that are needed to establish the overall meaning of the film.
