Women have had full rights for almost 100 years but they are still facing discrimination. According to studies, “Full time women workers’ earnings are only about 78% of their male counterparts’ earnings” (“Your Right To”). If the same job is being done at the same rate of quality then why are women losing out on money for their families or for themselves? The pay gap can also affect retirement funds for the future. The fact of the matter is women are making less than their male coworkers and it has to be changed. Women as a whole deserve to be equal to men in every way including money earned. Kennedy and it is now the year 2016. In 1963, the gender pay gap started out at around 41% (“Women Deserve Equal”). Basically this means that for every dollar a man made, a woman made 59 cents. Since then the gap has started to close and diminish. Since the beginning of this century, “this narrowing of the gap has slowed substantially” (“Women Deserve Equal”). Why is the closing of the gap slowing when we as a society are growing at a fast pace? Studies have shown, “Women fare better than men in jobs like bakers, food preparation workers, cafeteria assistants, and teacher assistants” (“Gender Pay Gap”). All of those jobs listed go right along with the stereotype that “All women belong in the kitchen”. In the medical field women face a pretty large pay gap. “One third of doctors and surgeons are women and their pay is 64.2% or their male colleagues” (“Gender Pay Gap”). Is there any reason for this other than discrimination? The answer to that question is yes. About 60% of the pay gap can be explained by hours, maternity leave, and negotiation but the remaining 40% can not (“Gender Pay Gap”). Most people understand that 60% of the gap but the real issue is the 40% because there is no explanation for it. The social injustice I chose was the Gender Wage Gap. That means that there is a huge difference of one gender getting paid less than the other. In 2009, female FTYR earned 77% (0.77) as much as the FTYR male workers (US Census Bureau, 2013). The history of Gender Gap earning reveals USA has made big strides towards reducing the gender pay gap from 1980. This began back in World War II, when the National Labor Board urged equalize the salary rates for women with the same rates that males were getting of the same professions. Women without a doubt do deserve equal pay. The gender pay gap may only last for a couple more years or maybe the wage gap may always exist. However that doesn’t make it right. Women go through their daily lives hearing the many excuses society throws at them. Men matter more, they need the money more, their more qualified, and so on. Nevertheless, none of that is true; women have proved to be independent hard working females who are depended on just as much as men. They have the same responsibilities to uphold and are just as qualified to perform at a man’s level.
