Keeping Peace of the League of Nations in the 1920's After WW1 the world was determined never to experience such horrors again. A League of Nationswas created so that countries had an equal say in world affairs despite their size and greatness and settled disputes by talk and not conflict. It was set up on the belief that all nations would join, all nations would follow the rules and be punished if they didn't. The League also hoped to encourage disarmament so that countries felt safe with the protection of the League. The main purpose League was that through 'co-operation' and 'concern' for the world, it would prevent another world war. The organisation of the League went from The Main Assembly to smaller commissions and agencies. The Assembly met annually in neutral Geneva, all member countries had a vote here to decide on major issues. It was too large to make quick decisions because every country had to agree. There was a Council which met frequently and quickly in times of crisis. The International Court in Holland settled small disputes such as fishing rights. The Commissions dealt with important social issues such as women's rights and drug addiction. The League was based on all members united and that fellow League members would take actions if another came into trouble. If for example-Belgium came under difficulty it would be the League that would solve the problem taking action against an aggressor, firstly they could issue a warning, then issue economic sanctions or thirdly declare war. But often warnings meant nothing, and countries were unwilling to stop trading with the aggressor because it would harm their country just as much. The League did not have its own army to declare war and countries were unwilling to use their troops if it wasn't in their self interest. After the Treaty of Versailles there were still unresolved disputes after the war where countries disagreed with the terms .There was continued violence and uncertainty. The League had to resolve international crises some were sorted out successfully some though
