Women In Modern Society

The 19th century was an unfavorable period for women and woman’s rights. It was a period in which society was dominated by males, where the primary source of income in the family and also the final decisions in the house were left to the man. Child rearing was often left to the women and women of a higher class were responsible for managing the maids and nurses who took care of the children. Today's modern 21st century is a tremendous step forward in woman’s rights and independence. Nora, Mrs. Linde and Anne-Marie all had to make extremely difficult choices in regards to their lives and I believe that today, the lives of women are significantly better and the roles of women in modern society have been greatly expanded on.

The marriage between Torvald and Nora is rather one-sided. While Torvald acted as the primary source of income for the family and made the final decisions. A man who doesn't believe in debt, “No debts! Never borrow! Something of freedom's lost – and something of beauty, too – from a house that's founded on borrowing and debt.” (Ibsen 890). In order to help support his family, Torvald worked many jobs for long hours “He took on all kinds of work that kept him going morning and night.” (Ibsen 890). The amount of effort put out by Torvald had very negative effects on his health “It wore him down, and they he fell deathly ill.” (Ibsen 890) and the sickness devastated Nora. Planning on moving the family to Italy to save Torvald, Nora broke the law and borrowed money without her husband's consent “. The trip would cost 4,800 crowns “Four thousand, eight hundred crowns. What do you say to that?” (Ibsen 896), an amount that Torvald nor Nora had. Nora had no choice but to borrow money in order to finance the trip but t...

Although it is reported in terms of employment that women make less than men for the same jobs, I feel that this is not a factor in complete equality. I understand the fact that women today may be making on average 77 cents for every dollar a man makes, (Whitehouse.gov), this fact does not lessen the reality that there are no limits to what a woman can do and that we as a species have come very far in terms of equality for all, not just in race but also in gender. From working as CEO of a multi-billion dollar company like Marissa Mayer at Yahoo (Yahoo Executive Team), to becoming the first woman in space like Sally Ride (Who Was Sally Ride?), it is clear that today's society can accept women to be capable of handling any type of career.
