Afghanistan is known worldwide to be a bad place for women. When the Taliban was in control things got worse for them. Women are and were attacked with acid for being outside of the home. Women were only allowed outside if completely covered from head to toe and accompanied by a male relative. Women who were doctors and teachers were forced to become beggars or prostitutes to support their families. Women who were accused of prostitution faced public stoning to death in a soccer stadium.

Things have gotten better but they are still bad. 85% of women are illiterate or have no formal education. Life expectancy for women is only 51. Women can only attend an all girl’s school that is close to home and the schools have been burned down before. Only 40% of girls attend primary school and 5% of girls attend school past grade six. Often girls do not attend school once they are married because they have to do household duties and have children. 50% of girls are married or engaged by age 12. They are often married to a much older man and if they are a Shi’a muslim there is a law which permits marital rape and makes education and work impossible unless the husband gives permission. There is also the struggle of widowed women. Widowed women often have to resort to begging or prostitution if they do not remarry. 94% of widows are illiterate.
