Women Are Not Possessions

To this day, men of the bourgeois class are coddled and prized, whereas we women [...] have learned to settle for less - to accept that we are either decorative, invisible, or one-dimensional (Hagedorn 403). Many decades have passed, yet we still extremely see women being treated as property. Even men with education feels that, a woman has no place in the work field, or being seen out in the public. They fear that a woman of power will only bring catastrophe if she ever controls the land and its people. They either do it unconsciously or consciously, but there is no denying that they continue to oppress women. They have always viewed women as nothing more than an accessory. Even if women are the only successors to the kingdom, their husbands will have the power and the threat of the previous king’s authority will always be there. According to Shakespeare, in the text “King Lear,” Goneril speaks of how King Lear “enguard his dotage with their pow’rs [...] And hold our lives in mercy (Act 1 Scene 4 332-333).” Even after King Lear gave all his lands away to his two daughters, he continues to keep his soldiers to show that he still has powers. For many decades, men continue to oppress women, and when women start to rise up against their superiors, they are treated as if they’re the wicked witch of the land, many have yet to realize that only through monarchy will we achieve equality. In the text called “King Lear,” Goneril speaks for her servants by asserting “You strike my people, and your disordered rabble [...] our court, infected with their manners (Act 1 Scene 4 262-263).” Men should not fear a woman of power, instead they should feel elated that women wants to be part of their kingdom’s best interest.
