On Friday, December 3rd, I attended Thousand Oaks 2016 winter dance concert Saved by the Bell. It was an amazing show all together and the theme was tied together throughout the show really well. The cafeteria lady character also really helped bring the show closer as a whole. The show introduced a lot of different unique styles to the audience including a spoken word piece. The show was also very diverse in the different levels of dancers that were presented on stage that evening but looking at it from the bigger picture, you can rarely tell who was in what class because their faces and entertainment value stood out more than the technique in most pieces. First, the green hole costuming was a green hole shirt with leggings and some extra spirit wear. The dance was about going to a Thousand Oaks High School football game and when you are going to the green hole that's exactly what you wear. For this dance, the green hole shirts are what really brought the fact that it was representing the green hole home. It also looked like they were actually at a game. Next the period 4 dance group had a girl cliques dance and every costume was original and represented different types of people you would see at a stereotypical high school. There was a prom queen, a nerdy kid, a sporty girl and many other types of unique costumes that in the big picture, showed the general population of a school. Finally, the period 3 dance group did an emotions dance and they wore a pastel blue color flowy dress. The dresses really fit with the theme of this dance which was high school emotions and feelings. Each dancer had a paper with an emotion or feeling written on it. The plain blue dresses really set a more serious tone for the dance and they looked really graceful on stage with it. They were all wearing the same exact thing and it made the dance look like one whole unit instead of multiple dancers. For example, there was one move in the green hole where they would throw their hands up and run to the other side of the stage. Most kids recognized that move because the green hole does that during the games on the bleachers. The dance also had a lot of energy included in it because the green hole is a big spirit group. There was a point in the dance where they ran into the crowd and it brought the energy of the audience up. The choreography of the girl cliques dance by Essence was like a dance battle and like the green hole dance, it was very energized. Everyone had a different type of character to portray and I think they did a really good job doing that. Not everyone was doing the same thing at the same time because it wasn't supposed to look really organized like that but in contrary, the period 3 dance group did a dance that was really organized and everyone had almost the same choreography for most of the dance. Like the other dance they all had a different feeling to create and everyone had their own feelings. Finally, each dance had a bigger message that got to the audience. As stated before, we began by breaking apart the stages of life and assigning each individual solos depending on the individual’s preference. Then, due to our time constraints, we opted to create our solos on our own time and to work on the movements that all of us must do together, together. The primary strategy of creating our movements and choreography for the dance was to correspond our movements to the meaning behind the lyrics being sung and the stage of life currently occurring. For example, before my solo as the three of us are playing together as children, the lyrics being sung were, “Are you going to age with grace? Are you going to age without mistakes…?” Because the lyrics were talking about the mistakes and blundering made as one matures, I took begin my solo, angrily kicked down the Jenga tower to show my frustration at my own personal faults. The kick both exhibits my balance as I kick and move my leg into an uncomfortable position and fits into the storyline and music shown, producing a stronger effect on the viewer. In the introduction, Mordden explains that “all its [musical theatre’s] artistry dwells in the historian’s key buzz term ‘integrated’: the union of story and score” (Mordden x). It is important for audience members to understand that musical numbers aren’t put into shows just for pure entertainment. Rather, the numbers are there to not only further the plot, but to also tell more about the characters than can be said in words. As many shows say: sometimes you just have to sing about it. Mordden also points out that “the historian recognizes other aspects of integration—of dance as a thematic and psychological instrument…” (Mordden x). Just as musical numbers reveal more about the character, so can dance. If the character is shy and reserved, their movements and dances will reflect it with smaller movements and less flashy numbers. Through, pitch, duration, tempo, timbre, dynamics, tecture, rests, structure and mood at different parts, Harlem Shake conveyed a desensitized depiction of gang warfare in the rough Harlem district of New York during the 1920s. Perhaps the lack of emotion tries to convey a darker message. Indeed, an emotion that accepts tragedy and evil as reality because it has always been present. Yet, instead of ignoring the evil, acknowledging it and finding the positive out of it may help deal with the issue: Dancing.
I had the pleasure of being in Western Kentucky University Dance Department’s concert, An Evening of Dance. The performance took place on April 29th through May 2nd in Russel Miller Theatre. It consisted of many works from faculty and guest artists. I felt like the concert was a success and that the choreography was all unique in its own way. I enjoyed the pieces that I performed, and the ones that my fellow company members were in. Through the analysis of “Petrichor”, I found that each production and chorographic element plays a large part in the successful outcome of a dance and emotional responses can be evoked by the simplest ideas.

Learning about Dance is particularly useful for those who do not have a wide and diverse dance contextual, such as students in a preliminary level or survey dance course. Dance is displayed through the human body, it has the control to communicate and induce reactions. Dance can be found in many different places, it enables the participants and seekers to touch and knowledge the joy of movement. Dance is discovered as being one of the oldest art forms worldwide. Dance existed in early cultures was recognized in a sequence of rock paintings portrayed dance. Since this discovery of rock paintings, several other forms of art have been found that depict dance. People used rituals in order to worship the gods and believed that the rituals held magical and spiritual powers. During the ancient period civilizations sentient decisions began to be made with regard to dance. Other periods that had an impact on dance were the medieval period, the renaissance period, and the contemporary period. According to Martha Graham, “Dance is the hidden language of the soul.” To me, dancing is more than just a hobby, it is my life. My dance team is also more than just a team, it is my second family. Each girl on my team has her own unique personality, but somehow, we all get along well. We are all such good friends and have had to make it through many difficult situations already, but all it has done was bring us closer together. The girls on my team are all caring, talented, and funny.
However, New York Public Schools offered ballroom dancing classes to low-income students of color, which allowed the arts to be included in their curriculum. Watching the film, I observed the positive reaction the children had to the dance classes. Overall, they were exposed to different cultures, made new friendships, became more confident, and aware of different career options such as professional dancers or singers (Agrelo, 2005).

The dancers in South-central Los Angeles, uses this form of art to express their feelings and it a form of communicating just like their ancestors did back in there days. At the same time, it allows them to have a much deeper connection with their roots.
In the beginning, the dancers start on the ground and in the motions of the music and essentially “slipping” through the past there was this rise and sink motion that was fluid. Both dancers arced, spoked and carved. Renee made lots of lines with her entire body as he held her straight (horizontally) in his arms and she also arced as she put her arms around him to hang on to him and as she let go of him she continued to make circle with her feet. In addition, in the beginning of the video, they created an infinity symbol with their legs and feet to an extent signify the past as always being a part of your life even after you slip through and let go.
'Dancing Through Life' and Hairspray's 'New Girl In Town' use dance as a tool to enhance the storyline of the musical.
The choreography for “The Green Table” cannot exactly be categorized as one thing or another. Jooss seems to employ two different types of dance: one being the traditional ballet, and the other being the modern technique. The use of traditional ballet can be seen in the dance of the soldiers with their light and graceful movements, particularly the one carrying the white flag. Contrary to this, the heavier, more central movements of dancers such as Death and the Partisan Woman illustrate modern dance technique similar to movements choreographed by Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey. The fact that Jooss utilizes both of these dance forms demonstrates his unique theories and adds a personal touch to this show. However, movement is not his only means of self-expression.
Also, the performers are constituted with same number of men and women. They imply the importance of equality through the performance. The female and male dancers use the same movements to show that they are equal. The message being conveyed here is important, on the grounds of its social influence and giving the whole performance a deeper meaning. The thing makes dancing different and odd to other occupations is the fact that most famous and well known dancers are mostly females, since on other social circumstances males tend to dominate more realms. Here, besides all the female masters, the male dancers appear as much as the female artists do and they also showcase what they are capable of. As I watched more of the performance, the interactions between dancers and the LED lights became more appealing to me. Dancers use their bodies to interpret the connections between human beings and technology. Moreover, the background music also plays a vital role in the production of this whole piece of art. The tempo of the music, the dance movements, as well as the frequency of the lights going on and off together appeared to the audience as a desirable combination. I love how the dancers do every movements according to the rhythm of the music and how they two fit perfectly. All of those things together made a great show to watch and
The dances and movements of todays is influenced by the evolution of dance. Likewise, culture has played a significant role in dance. There are various reasons to dance, and dance is incorporated in numerous functions. For years, people have dance at weddings, religious ceremonies, professional, clubs, and just for fun. On the other hand, the dance forms have changed over time. Some of the same techniques and styles are common in today’s dancing, but still many changes. Each generation introduces something new to the industry of dance. Dance is an art that continues to grow. One of the great aspects of dance is taking a style of dance and adding your own personal flavor. In other words, dance is not a cut and dry art form. Preparing for the final evening was as much fun as the event itself. We were a group of eighteen girls. Some, like I, had some background in Kathak while others were dancing in this style for the first time. The teachers worked hard with us over a period of twenty days. They encouraged the team and were patient with us as we fumbled with the steps. It was hard work as the steps of the dance were changed few times till we got the steps all the eighteen girls were comfortable with. We did not grudge the effort and looked forward to performing before the parents.
