In the story, “The Runt” by Eric Skipper a character named Willis is primarily discussed throughout the story along with three other crew members. Throughout the story, we get to see how Willis interacts with the other employees on the field. Willis is a college student who recently moved to Garrett, Georgia. He moved to Georgia because he was offered a position as a supervisor of the field. Willis’ boss is named Moss, he is a “fat, bleary-eyed man.” Moss is responsible for driving Willis to work every morning and making sure everything is running accordingly. Willis role on the field is to make sure that the workers are completing their responsibilities correctly as well as ensuring they don’t surpass their breaks. We see how Willis tries to take action but those actions don't seem to help the issue. We also see Willis trying to fit in and be one of the workers. He tends to be very lenient in order to maintain his friendship with the employees. He was advised by his boss, Moss that the crew often times got into fights which were never very serious but to inform him if anything occurred. As the days’ progress, we see that their altercations become very intense. In the situation it would be Willis responsibility to inform Moss of the problems among the workers. Instead, he tries to fix the issue himself and tries to have the crew members on his side. By not telling Moss, he believes that the crew will like him more and consider him to be one of the guys. We see that Willis usually tries to defend Rafa as much as possible. But instead of defending him he's kind of throwing him under the bus. Every time that Willis tries to help Rafa things seem to get worse. For example, Willis notices that Rafa's’ hat isn't in very good condition so he tries to buy him a new one. As he buys the hate he already has an idea that the other crew members might get upset because he might be showing favoritism. When he rescues Rafa from the water, he worries that the others might notice that Willis likes him more than the others. He states, “He caught his breath and saw me standing in the wáter an expression of alarm came into his face. The Mexicans had grown silent and I could feel them watching me” (109). He doesn’t seem to care that the others might notice and feel offended instead he buys him the hat and gives it to him. Eventually, he gets beaten for it and Willis doesn't seem to care very much because he knew that it would happen. He states, “When I returned to work on Monday I was not surprised to see Octavio wearing the hat I had given Rafa, and Rafa was wearing his old one” (96). He didn’t understand that there
