William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
‘Romeo and Juliet’, the play was written by the famous English writer
William Shakespeare and was first performed in 1595 during the reign
of Queen Elizabeth I, the play was set in Verona, Italy. It’s the
world’s most famous drama of tragic young love. The story is based on
two main characters ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Romeo is the son of Montague
and Juliet is the daughter of Capulet. Who are in deep sweet love and
the only thing that is stopping them is that they’re of two different
families who loathe each other. The story begins with the Montague’s
servants (Romeo’s family) brawling against the Capulet’s servants
(Juliet’s family), Benvolio tries to break up the fight but the Prince
arrives and warns everyone that anyone brawling in the streets of
Verona will be punished with death. Also Romeo is in love with
Rosaline and goes to a party to see Rosaline but then sets eyes on
Juliet and they fall in love. The words ‘cowardice and bravery’ will
be used often in my essay so I have defined their meanings for you,
cowardice means a lack of courage, as Bravery stands for the quality
of being brave and acting with courage.
Romeo is the main character of the story, he is in love with Rosaline
but when sets eyes on Juliet he cannot look away. He is also the
cousin of Benvolio who I will be reviewing later on in this essay. I
would say that Romeo is almost a fully brave character for he does not
act as a villain like Tybalt but he is part cowardice. Romeo is brave
because he doesn’t walk around looking for fights to kill someone to
prove anything. He is a very calm and peaceful person and only reacts
when needed as he shows in Act 3 Scene I where Tybalt tries to provoke
Romeo to fight him : “Tybalt, the reason that I have love thee doth
much excuse the appertaining rage to such a greeting, villain am I
none. Therefore farewell; I see thou knowst me not.
