Movies and screenplays are often said to be based on a true story. William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is an example of a screenplay that is assumed to be based on a true story but is actually just historic character’s names being used in a brand new story. From the characters, setting, and events all seem to be completely fictional.
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth contradicts the historic account of the actual people in Macbeth’s time as king. Some examples of character’s whose events in Macbeth and the actual historical accounts are Macbeth, Malcolm, and the three witches. In Macbeth, Macbeth was a tyrant king and was despised by many as shown in this quote: “Not in the legions/ Of horrid Hell can come a devil more damned/ In evils to top Macbeth (55-57 Scene iii, Act 4).” While in historic accounts Macbeth was a true king who brought prosperity unto Scotland as shown in this excerpt: “For 17 years, life was peaceful and prosperous as Macbeth ruled with an even hand and encouraged the spread of Christianity (A&E television network).” This quote shows how good of a man Macbeth really was and not how Macbeth shows Macbeth to be, a traitorous king. The next character Macbeth contradicts is Malcolm. In Macbeth, Malcolm is shown to be one of the courageous leaders that overthrew Macbeth as shown in this quote: “Be comforted. /Let’s make us med ’cines of our great revenge, /To cure this deadly grief (213-215 Scene iii, Act 4).” But in historical context he did battle Macbeth but with Siward, earl of Northumbria, instead of Macduff and he fought Macbeth for revenge of Macbeth’s defeat of his father, Duncan. These actions are shown in this quote: “Siward, earl of Northumbria, accompanied by Malcolm, led an army north into Scotla...

...e elements did not hinder the play however because it is widely considered to be one of Shakespeare’s best plays. Deceitfulness and completely ignoring the truth can help improve a play or story because it you can mold the events to the persons liking but it can also help bury it in lies.

The Tragedy of Macbeth is a fictional play written by English poet William Shakespeare. The play is set in eleventh century Scotland, during the reign of King James the first. Shakespeare evidently writes in this time period to describe the link between leaders and their supreme or ultimate power. The play was first performed in the year 1606, at the world famous Globe Theatre, and is considered one of the most profound and compelling tragedies ever told. The Tragedy of Macbeth tells the tale of a brave Scottish general named Macbeth and his ambitious desire to become king of Scotland. While he and another commander named Banquo return home from war they stumble into three hagged looking witches. The witches offer the men an enticing prophecy that leads to a more pivotal role found later in the play. Throughout the play Macbeth is seen confronting his own moral ambiguity to the heinous acts he must perform to get the position he most desires. “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, [s]hakes so my single state of man” (Shakespeare 1.3.152-53). This uncertainty, present in the scenes of Duncan’s murder, the feast, and the witch’s final predictions each unfold the ambiguity needed to understand the basis of the work as a whole.
Macbeth is a play written by Shakespeare that is set in eleventh century Scotland. It details the life of the Macbeth, a brave and noble man who is described as ‘Bellona’s bridegroom’ (1.3.54), specifically the events after he meets three supernatural creatures who tell him about his fate. The reader should see Macbeth as a great man whose ambition for security leads to his downfall. Ambitions and manipulation from his wife cause him to commit Duncan’s murder, but this particular murder does not relate to Macbeth’s downfall. This man’s ambition for the crown turns into ambition for security after he becomes king, causing him to kill more to keep his unrightful kingship safe. There are a lot of supernatural occurrences in this play, but Macbeth is not wholly influenced by the prophecies or apparitions. Shakespeare wanted the modern viewer to see how ambition and over-confidence can lead man to his downfall. Macbeth represents this perfectly.
At the time Shakespeare wrote Macbeth, it was the beginning of the seventeenth century. The reign of Macbeth was actually during the mid-eleventh century. He became king in 1040 after killing King Duncan who according to Fisher “was an ineffectual king” (Fisher, 43). Macbeth would then rule for the next 17 years, having appeared “to have been a good king, active and conscientious, if not always able to hold on to the whole of the territory he had gained through the murder of Duncan” (Fisher, 44). Quite the opposite in the play, Shakespeare portrays Macbeth as an evil and cruel king during the whole time of his reign. Glover points out this untruth, “Macbeth’s character has suffered unjustly at the hands of Shakespeare, as he ruled Scotland well for some seventeen years, and there is evidence that the country enjoyed some prosperity during his reign” (Glover, 39). Yet Macbeth’s reign did end in 1057 when he was killed by Malcolm, Duncan’s son, in the battle of Lumphanan. However, it wasn’t until after Macbeth’s step-son Lulach ruled for about a year, that Malcolm became king after killing him in 1058. This is where Shakespeare ends the play wit...
Shakespeare’s character Macbeth is based on the historical figure of a Scottish nobleman called Macbeth who was the general for Duncan the first. He also became King after murdering Duncan on the battlefield and reined for ten years before being defeated in a battle against the Danes (Thrasher 35-36). “For brave Macbeth- well he deserves that name” is a passage from the war in the first chapter showing what the other warriors thought of Macbeth valor as a general for Duncan’s army (Macbeth 302). Then Shakespeare tells of Duncan’s death which he concocted the setting in Macbeth’s home to suit his needs. “I go, and it is done: the bell invites me. Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell That summons the to heaven, or to hell” this shows that Macbeth’s action where preplanned to kill Duncan as he slept (Macbeth p.321). Shakespeare’s account of who Macbeth was is close to the factual account even down to the fact that he murdered the former King Duncan and his battle with an army lead by Malcolm Canmore, the son of Duncan (Columbia University). William Shakespeare's Macbeth Shakespeare first showed Macbeth in the court of a newly crowned King James the First. Some people would argue that in places this was written as a piece of flattery for James the first. James was meant to be a descendant of Banquos' and therefore Shakespeare shows Banquo to be a valiant and heroic character throughout the play. However, Shakespeare had to be careful what he said in the play, as he didn't want to upset the King. This play could be written as a piece of propaganda or a warning to anybody who went against the King.

Shakespeare pays much regard as to what it is to be a man and to
One detail from history that Shakespeare changes in order to fit his play is characters. Three of the most important characters in Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth are Duncan, Macbeth, and Malcolm. Shakespeare keeps these characters similar to the historical person that they are modeled after. Shakespeare’s Duncan is King of Scotland and has two sons, one of those sons being Malcolm. In history, King Duncan I of Scotland in fact has a son named Malcolm, later King Malcolm III (Military Defeat and Death). Shakespeare’s play also has one character named Macbeth who murders King Duncan in order to become king. In history however, Macbeth kills Duncan in battle rather than murdering him (Macbeth). The third character is modeled after King Malcolm III. Shakespeare’s Malcolm is the son of Duncan who wants to see Macbeth brought to justice by being put to death. This character is kept true to his historical model.
The historical King Macbeth reigned in Scotland for 17 years from 1040-1057. He had a wife named Coruoch and a stepson named Luloch. Although Macbeth did kill Duncan, he was not the gentle king as described in Macbeth. Killing a king was not uncommon at this time as, Macbeth’s 7-9 predecessors were killed as well. In 1050, Macbeth went on a religious pilgrimage to Rome to seek absolution for Duncan’s death. Unlike Macbeth, Malcolm (rather than Macduff) killed the historical Macbeth. Luloch, known as the “Idiot,” reigned for five months after Macbeth’s death until Malcom overthrew him. Although there are differences between Shakespeare’s Macbeth and the historical figure Macbeth, it is obvious that Shakespeare based his character on this Scottish king.
William Shakespeare’s tragedy play Macbeth bears little resemblance to the actual history of Scotland. Through his writing he praised King James I’s ancestor, Banquo, as an innocent victim who was betrayed by his good friend, Macbeth. However, in reality he helps Macbeth kill Duncan. Shakespeare even changed history by creating Macbeth as a dark and evil human and also including scenes of witchcraft. William drastically altered history for the approval and satisfaction of King James I.
Macbeth is put together with many character traits. He is a very complex character. In the beginning Macbeth was brave and loyal. He won the battle of Norway and became the Thane of Cawdor. For brave Macbeth disdainding fortune with his brandished steel which smoked with bloody execution( ACT1 SC2 LNS18-20). Macbeth is also a gullible man, when he runs into the witches he believes them when they say, all hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter(act1 sn2 line 50) . He is so gullible to what these witches said that he killed his best friend Banquo and nearly kills Banquo's son. Macbeth also was convinced by his wife to kill Duncan. Macbeth conscious becomes guilty after he kills Duncan when he said, will all great neptunes ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?(act2 sn2 lines 79-80). He is thinking that nothing can take back the murders he had committed.
In what is said to be one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies, Macbeth, there are many historical inaccuracies. Many experts in literature believe Shakespeare did this for a couple reasons. One reason is that the changes in history give the play a more dramatic purpose and more exciting story than what actually happened. Another reason could be to give Macbeth and more complicated characterization. The most believed reason that Shakespeare altered history was because he wanted to cater to the desires of the current monarch, King James the First, who was a descendant of Banquo, one of the main characters of the story.
