One of William Shakespeare’s most well-known plays, Romeo and Juliet, tells the story of two star-crossed lovers from opposite families that are victims to tragic circumstances. Romeo and Juliet meet each other for the first time at a party and they fall in love and eventually decide to get married. Mercutio is the closest friend to Romeo and plays an important role in his life. Mercutio 's concern is always for Romeo and for peace between the two families, the Capulets and the Montagues. Mercutio is the first to see that Romeo is deeply in love. Tybalt, is Juliet 's cousin who kills Mercutio and Romeo kills Tybalt in return and is exiled from Verona. Juliet is being forced to marry Count Paris. A plan comes about that Juliet is to be drugged which would cause her to appear dead and therefore preventing her from having to marry Count Paris. Mercutio is a wise friend of Romeo and when he finds out Tybalt 's challenge to Romeo, he is entertained because he regards Romeo as a lover whose experience of struggle is limited to the world of love. So Mercutio says, "Alas, poor Romeo, he is already dead…And is he such a man to encounter Tybalt?" (Shakespeare, Act 2, Scene 4, line 1143). Mercutio mockery of Romeo’s love is seen again, even though Romeo is in danger. He lessens the gravity of the scene and this is also seen by his impact on the balcony scene. When Romeo and Juliet agree on getting married and come up with a plan, Romeo says “And I’ll still stay, to have thee still forget, forgetting any other home but this” (Shakespeare, Act 2, Scene 2, line 1011). Getting married is a big milestone in life and they are hastily making the decision of forming a union. Mercutio’s mockery of Romeo’s wooing for Juliet, has impacted the reader’s sensitivity of the balcony
