William Shakespeare, an illustrious and eminent playwright from the Elizabethan Age (16th Century) and part owner of the Globe theatre wrote A Midsummer Night’s Dream in which he portrays the theme of love in many different ways. These include the paternal love seen in the troubled times for Egeus and his rebellious daughter Hermia, true Love displayed with the valiant acts of Lysander and Hermia and the destructive love present in the agonizing acts of Titania towards her desperate lover Oberon. Through the highs and lows of love, the first love we clasp is the paternal love from our family.
To start off, Shakespeare's elaborate use of figurative language is a huge reason why his writing is still taught centuries after his death. He used an extensive amount of this language to deliver a sense of emotion and depth in what his characters are saying. In some cases, Shakespeare will use figurative language to foreshadow future events in the play. For example, Friar Lawrence is talking to Romeo about the secret marriage he was being asked to do when he states, "These violent delights have violent ends. And in their triumph die, like fire and powder." In this case, Friar is basically reminding the audience that the forbidden lovers will die no matter how much they attempt to fix it. Shakespeare also uses figurative language to indicate a somewhat clear time period when actions take place. When Benvolio is talking to the Montagues about the last time he saw Romeo, he says, " An hour before the worshipped sun/ peered forth the golden window of the east." Shakespeare could have easily used simplistic language to explain the time of day the actions were taking place, but instead he personified the sun in a very pure and beautiful way.

The performances of his plays have influenced many actors and companies to abide by the guidelines that were put in place so many years ago. Shakespearean plays are in a sense in a category of their own as they have evolved with the changing times, while staying in similar forms.

During Shakespeare’s time, Renaissance was considered a positive evocation of representing a societal rebirth. However, social historians and modernists view the term in a more pejorative fashion. The question of whether Shakespeare’s work represents historical or trans-historical significance is open to debate. Perhaps the brilliance of Shakespeare occurs with the fact his works have endured and engendered so much dialogue. The popularity of Macbeth through the years exemplifies this fact. Arguably, it is due to the never ending duality of the fight between good and evil evoked in the drama. Due to the antiquity of his language, Shakespeare’s modern readership consists mostly of students and intellectuals, whereas in Shakespeare’s own time, his plays were performed in playhouses packed with everyone from royalty to peasants. Because of this, Shakespeare was forced to write on many different levels, the most sophisticated of which appealed to his more elite audience members, while the more straightforward and often more crude of which appealed to his less educated viewers, and the most universal of which still appeals to us.
Sonnets have been loved for centuries for their poetic and expressive themes about love. William Shakespeare, a timeless figure known for his significant contribution to English literature and the arts, wrote a hundred sonnets during his lifetime and its universal themes such as love are enjoyed by readers today. His sonnets described the passing of time from someone in love by using a wide range of imagery and metaphors. Shakespeare is quite a romanticist but not all of his works are happy. For example, Romeo and Juliet was a splendid depiction of the struggles of two young lovers trying to be together. The movie Shakespeare in Love gives readers a fictional and alternative view of what kind of inspiration during Shakespeare’s life influenced his plays and writing to be so tender and romantic.
One does not simply become the father of English literature. To be coined such a grandiose title requires the approval of many, and especially the king of England. Although an entertaining storyline does earn one respect as a writer/poet. It was Shakespeare’s masterful use of literary devices that garners the respect and acknowledgement of many modern day professors. His works include 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and 2 epic narrative poems, the First of which was published after his death in 1623 by two of Shakespeare's acting companions, John Heminges and Henry Condell. Since then, the works of Shakespeare have been studied, analyzed, and enjoyed as some of the finest work of art in the English language.
