Nature has been an impactful inspiration for many artists and their art forms. It is a unique composition where organisms and its environment interact like partners in a dance, sounds in a song and paint in a painting. Canadian aboriginal art is substantially based on nature. Aboriginal people derived their own existence and culture from nature and then use them to inspire their art. Similarly, wilderness artists use their experience with nature to influence their art. They use what they have observed to create authentic representation of nature. The term “wilderness art” is quite generic in comparison to “Canadian aboriginal art” in which it is more unique and its traditional medium is limited by the materials that indigenous people had access to. Contemporary artists now make use of more mediums such as print making. Another unique aspect of Aboriginal art is its more abstract representation of nature. It makes use of dynamic lines and shapes to depict color and texture. Its style is more recognizable than the common realism that most wilderness artists strive for. Regardless of their differences, aboriginal art and wilderness art is the purest method of using nature as visual art. Kim Donaldson is a wilderness artist who was inspired by the environment that he lives in: Africa. He was lured into exploring Africa by all the animals and landscapes that was unique to it. According to his book, Africa, he has travelled to many places including Botswana and Tanzania. In his book, he also showcased his sketchbooks. His sketchbooks are packed with many ideas and observations that gave an insight into his exploration. it makes the sketches just as authentic as his artworks by allowing viewers to see how he become the artist he
