Section A: Brief information about Wi-Fi Wi-Fi history: Wi-Fi is short for wireless fidelity. It is a brand which was originally licensed by the Wi-Fi alliance. It was developed to be used for mobile computer devices such as laptops and in Local Area Networks. However, nowadays it is being used also in gaming, voice over IP phone access and for basic connectivity of electronics such as Televisions, DVD players and digital cameras. At the time being research is being done in order to start using Wi-Fi by cars in highways for transportation, as a purpose of safety, to gather statistics and enable mobile commerce. Any products which are tested and approved as ‘Wi-fi Certified’ which is a registered trademark by the Wi-Fi Alliance, are certified as interoperable with each other, even if they are from different manufacturers. A user with a ‘Wi-Fi Certified’ product can use any brand of access point with any other brand of client hardware that is also certified. Typically, however, any Wi-Fi product using the same radio frequency will work with any other, even if it is not ‘Wi-Fi Certified’. Uses of Wi-Fi: A person with a Wi-Fi enabled device can connect his laptop, PDA or cell phone to the internet when he or she is near an access point. The area covered by one or several access points is called a hotspot. Hotspots can range from a single room to many square miles of overlapping hotspots. Wi-Fi hotspots can be found in restaurants, hotels, coffee shops, and in other places all around the world. The technology is also used in hospitals and in universities to connect cabled networks in different buildings. It has been found to be very helpful for students and teachers alike and there is evidence that it provides an overall improvement in the areas where there are wireless networks, such as greater efficiency and productivity. Furthermore, you could benefit financially from the installation of Wi-Fi systems. By offering Wi-Fi access to people from outside the university at a charge, you can generate extra income.
